UPPER ATMOSPHERE LIGHTNING a RARE phenomenon only FEW KNOWS ABOUT. Amazing photography inside!!!

in #photography8 years ago (edited)

What if i told you that there is several kind of lightning that start way over storm cloud and goes straight up to almost 100 km. Guess what, this shit is real and people are making photos of it! The reason why not many heard about this is because it is very fast to notice, but with normal equipment lot of people was able to capture beautiful photography of this stuff.

There is plenty of lightning types happening ABOVE the cloud!

My friend is one of them, posting pictures in this amazing FB group! Check them out :) https://www.facebook.com/groups/376355972487572/?fref=ts
It is actually fairly easy to get a picture of them. There are basically two most common ways, using extremely sensitive industrial camera or normal DSLR. Take a look at those two pictures:

To successfuly observe Sprites and others Upper-Atmospheric Electric Phemomena you need clear view to space above the storm. Therefore the storm itself must be 100's of kilometers away from you (that is where meteoradar and stormhunting pages comes in handy).

How to look for Sprites (and others)

Very informative piece of information here mirrax. Highly abstract from the normal understanding of storms and interpretations of how mother nature truly dominates us all. Its humbling to say the least that there are people out there who are able to pick the bones and find these types of "art" essentially with educational purposes.

I have also learnt something today. Thanks kind sir

Hi, thanks a lot. IMO this is ideal mix of stormchasing and astrophotography. If the storm is near you, go chase it. However if the storm is 100's of kilometers away and you have clear sky... making photos/videos of some Sprites is very interesting alternative :D

couldn't agree more! what a time to be alive

+1 live it up!

I agree with Doc in his comment 100% Excellent article and upvoted.

Thank you keith, I am very glad you like it :)

Looks cool. I just learn something, thanks!

You are very welcome! I was absolutely fascinating by this stuff when I first find out about it. What surprised me even more was, that my friend living nearby was actually making pretty good DIY photography of all this...

When i was a child, my father and I were watching the end of a very violent lightning storm (same one we witnessed strike our neighbors house) and an orb of glowing light made its way along the edge of the woods and up into the sky almost like a movie... a spirit...ufo... it was a ball of lightning. I will never forget it as it had no sound and almost looked as if it was being crafted.

I saw ball lightning ending in explosion when I was like 14y old. It was so strange. Great video, really enjoyed watching it. We live in such an interesting world :)
