Hydrangea macrophylla: The Bigleaf Hydrangea
Hydrangea macrophylla, commonly known as Bigleaf Hydrangea, is one of the most beloved ornamental shrubs found in gardens across temperate regions. Known for its spectacular floral displays and lush green foliage, this plant is a true icon in cottage gardens, shaded borders, and decorative containers. Native to Japan, Hydrangea macrophylla has captured the hearts of gardeners around the world for both its beauty and botanical curiosity—especially its ability to change flower color depending on soil pH.
Botanical Classification
Scientific name: Hydrangea macrophylla
Family: Hydrangeaceae
Common names: Bigleaf hydrangea, French hydrangea, Mophead hydrangea, Lacecap hydrangea
Physical Description
Hydrangea macrophylla is a deciduous shrub that typically grows to a height and spread of 1 to 2 meters. It is known for its:
Large, glossy green leaves: Broad, ovate leaves with serrated edges that can reach up to 15 cm long.
Striking flower heads: Blooms appear in summer and range in shape and size. There are two main floral forms:
Mophead: Large, globe-shaped flower heads made up mostly of showy sterile flowers.
Lacecap: Flatter flower clusters with a center of small fertile flowers surrounded by a ring of showy sterile blooms.
Color-Changing Blooms
Perhaps the most intriguing feature of Hydrangea macrophylla is its ability to change flower color based on soil pH:
Acidic soil: Flowers tend to be blue due to higher availability of aluminum ions.
Neutral to alkaline soil: Blooms shift to pink or red, as aluminum becomes less available.
