Winter in a 1000 years old city in north Germany
Finally!
The winter arrived north Germany. Probably not everybody does enjoy it, but I love snow! Of course, I didn’t wait long, took my camera and went on a walk downtown by night.
In this post I’ll show you my hometown Nienburg and share pictures of typical German architecture with interesting historical facts.
I hope you enjoy!
Nienburg was founded in 1025 and its names means “neue Burg”. So literally translate it with “Newcastle”. You can still find some old pieces of the walls and there are also a lot of historical buildings to discover.
Let’s start!
Some time ago this place was used as a market. That’s why it is called Marktplatz. In December you’ll find our Weihnachtsmarkt there!
At the same place is the biggest church of Nienburg. It was built around 1500 and is the highest building in Nienburg. (To be honest I have never been inside actually…). Its name is St. Martinskirche. “Kirche” is the German word for church.
This building is called “Posthof”. It used to be a post station but today it is a library. They say it was built in the 16th century. It is always crazy to think about that when I get some books!
This statue is called Kleine Nienburgerin (little girl from Nienburg). It is based on an old song and is the result of a contest. To celebrate the 750th birthday of the city, people had the opportunity to design a new sight. You will find this statue behind the Posthof.
Side fact: the first prototype got kidnapped once but as you can see: Whoever has stolen it brought it back – only one day later.
Another interesting fact is that Nienburg is famous for its asparagus. So famous that you can even get in Dubai sometimes! Of course, downtown shows some sights about this!
On the picture above, you see our “asparagus museum”. I’m not kidding: We really have a museum which is just about asparagus. By the way: The German word for asparagus is “Spargel”. So if you ever find some Nienburger Spargel somewhere: GET IT!
This sight is at the end of the longest street downtown. It is a fountain and the statues in front of it sell some of that vegetable. In the water you can see a bunch of coins. People throw it in there because they believe in luck.
Nienburg has some partnerships with other European cities from Belgium, Belarus and Poland but also one from USA, New Mexico. These blocks represent the foreign towns and the screens are showing some details about them.

Unfortunately, it’s raining while I am writing this article. Tomorrow morning the snow will be gone again. But still it was a nice tour through my hometown, and I was enjoying the walk.
I hope you enjoyed the impressions, too!
What do you think about winter? Too cold or do you also enjoy some snow?
Great night time pictures!
Greetings from the south part of germany. ;)
