[ENG-SPN] The legend of the Cantabrian Venus / La leyenda de la Venus cántabra

Millennia have passed since those epic episodes, which, under the generic name of the Cantabrian Wars, generated glorious deeds that one day went on to swell the pages of the history of what is now Spain -at least, for now- raising the altars of dignity, not only the way in which the peoples of the North put the almighty Roman Empire in check, but also, that heroic acceptance of death, rather than being deprived of freedom and being vassals of others. We also know that history, generally possessed by the spirit of cruelty of the stepmother of the Snow White story, is not always fair and equitable and there are really few women who appear in its pages, standing out for their heroism, their sacrifice and its value.

Now, compared to the disdain of History, there is the passion of Tradition, which, after all, is the Alma Mater of the people and also, metaphorically speaking, that Wheel of Fortune, which sometimes puts things in his place and raises to the heights who deserves it. It would be the case of an extraordinary Cantabrian warrior, who is still remembered in those mountain places whose villages she protected, not only from the raids of the Roman soldiery, but also from the bands of outlaws that devastated the region at that time and from which, for lack of a better and perhaps more unpronounceable name, is known as the Cantabrian Venus: inhabitant of the most secret corners of Pico Jano, the elders of those places assert that before appearing in defense of the underdogs, they they saw mysterious lights on the top of the mountains, which the villagers identified as the ever-watchful eyes of their brave heroine. An immortal heroine, who, after centuries, is still talked about on cold winter nights, in the warmth of homes and whose appearance is always expected, in moments of greatest difficulty.

Han pasado milenios, desde aquellos épicos episodios, que, bajo el nombre genérico de Guerras Cántabras, generaron gloriosas gestas que pasaron un día a engrosar las páginas de la historia de lo que hoy en día es España -al menos, de momento- elevando a los altares de la dignidad, no sólo la manera en la que los pueblos del Norte pusieron en jaque al todopoderoso Imperio romano, sino también, esa heroica aceptación de la muerte, antes que verse privados de libertad y siendo vasallos de otros. Sabemos, también, que la Historia, generalmente poseída por el espíritu de la crueldad de la madrastra del cuento de Blancanieves, no siempre es justa y equitativa y son realmente pocas, las mujeres que figuran en sus páginas, destacando por su heroísmo, su sacrificio y su valor.

Ahora bien, frente al desdeño de la Historia, está la pasión de la Tradición, que, al fin y al cabo, es el Alma Mater de los pueblos y también, metafóricamente hablando, esa Rueda de la Fortuna, que en ocasiones pone las cosas en su lugar y eleva a las alturas a quien así lo merece. Sería el caso de una extraordinaria guerrera cántabra, a la que todavía se recuerda en aquellos lugares montañeses a cuyas aldeas protegió, no sólo de las rapiñas de la soldadesca romana, sino también de las bandas de forajidos que asolaban la región por aquel entonces y de la que, a falta de otro nombre mejor y quizás más impronunciable, se conoce como la Venus cántabra: habitante de los rincones más secretos del Pico Jano, aseveran, los ancianos de aquellos parajes, que antes de aparecer en defensa de los desvalidos, se veían unas misteriosas luces en lo más alto de los montes, que los aldeanos identificaban como los ojos, siempre atentos, de su valerosa heroína. Una heroína inmortal, de la que todavía, al cabo de los siglos, se habla en las frías noches de invierno, al calor de los hogares y de la que siempre se espera su aparición, en los momentos de mayor dificultad.
