It is true that not all medieval stonemasons possessed the same ability and mastery when it came to building a temple with the appropriate proportions in relation to its corresponding dedication, nor did they shine excessively when it came to displaying artistic skills that made them stand out in something as delicate as sculpting stone and imbuing it with beauty and meaning.
In fact, stone was an extremely expensive material, and stonemasons were aware that every block or ashlar they damaged with their chisel and stonemasonry had an inevitable impact on their wages; in other words, they were docked.
Even so, they were extremely careful, and although many Rural Romanesque sculptures, for example, lack style and depth, they nonetheless fulfilled the educational function for which they were intended, although crude, they remained the reference textbooks of medieval societies.
Es cierto que no todos los canteros medievales tenían la misma capacidad y maestría a la hora de levantar un templo con las proporciones adecuadas en relación a la correspondiente advocación, como tampoco brillaban excesivamente a la hora de mostrar unas habilidades artísticas que les hicieran destacar en algo tan delicado como escupir la piedra y dotarla de belleza y significado.
De hecho, la piedra era un material demasiado costoso y los canteros eran conscientes de que cada bloque o sillar que malograban con su escoplo y su cincel, repercutía irremediablemente en su salario; en otras palabras: se les descontaba.
Aún así, eran sumamente cuidadosos y aunque muchas esculturas del románico rural, por ejemplo, adolecen de estilismo y profundidad, no por ello dejaban de cumplir la función pedagógica para la que estaban destinadas y aunque toscas, seguían siendo el libro de cabecera de las sociedades medievales.
