Monumento a los Sitios de Zaragoza
Immediately after the War of Independence and following the agreements and decrees of the Cortes of Cádiz recognizing those heroic cities and the defenders who distinguished themselves for their heroic actions during the sieges and the war, at least eight monument projects to General Palafox and the defenders were launched in Zaragoza. There were also three projects in the early years of the 20th century, two of which (proposed by architects Félix Navarro and Ricardo Magdalena) involved the reconstruction of the Torre Nueva, demolished just ten years earlier. However, the one that was finally realized was the one presented by Agustín Querol. In the summer of 1907, he submitted three large oil sketches, from which the one to be built was chosen.
The center of the main avenue of the exhibition grounds was chosen as the site for its construction, which would later become the current Plaza de los Sitios.
The monument was not yet finished in May 1908, when the Hispano-French Exposition opened. It was at the end of August that Querol announced its completion from Madrid. It was inaugurated on October 28, just over a month before the exhibition closed.
Inmediatamente después de la guerra de la Independencia y tras los acuerdos y decretos de las Cortes de Cádiz que reconocían a aquellas ciudades heroicas y a los defensores que destacaron por sus acciones heroicas durante los asedios y la guerra, se sucederán al menos ocho proyectos de monumentos en Zaragoza al general Palafox y a los defensores. También hubo tres proyectos en los primeros años del siglo XX, dos de ellos (propuestos por los arquitectos Félix Navarro y Ricardo Magdalena) consistían en la reconstrucción de la Torre Nueva, demolida hacía apenas diez años. Pero el que se realizará será el presentado por Agustín Querol. En el verano de 1907 presentó tres grands bocetos al óleo, de los que saldrá elegido el que se llevará a cabo.
Se eligió como lugar para su construcción el centro de la avenida principal del recinto de la exposición, que se configurará luego como la actual plaza de los Sitios.
El monumento no estaba terminado todavía en mayo de 1908, cuando se inauguró la exposición Hispanofrancesa. Será a finales de agosto cuando Querol comunique desde Madrid que lo había terminado. Se inaugurará el 28 de octubre, poco más de un mes antes de clausurarse la exposición.
