How To Make a Moodboard for photography, production, film, and marketing [Steemit Exclusive - original moodboards]

The key with making a good moodboard whether it's for a video shoot, photo-shoot, brand identity, or for a film, is you want to make your biggest, centered image your subject. Everything else can convey general mood, lighting, types of framing, and shots, but your main image needs to reflect your subject. The above moodboard is for a selective color spot I'm currently pitching a technology company for Valentine's Day.

The following moodboards are original moodboards I've created, some contain photos I've shot, most images compiled were found online, and I will also let you know what they were for and the outcome.

This moodboard was for a shoot we did with Sofia Vergara for her underwear line: EBY which stands for Empowered By You, their underwear is seamless, and each purchase goes towards micro-loans for women to start businesses in developing countries that they pay back with no interest. We got the job.

The two mood boards above were for a photoshoot we did in the desert at an art installation called desert X, and some other shots we did with colored smoke and umbrellas. This was done for my own underwear company, Culprit Underwear, which is launching in January. I will share the photos from that shoot in an upcoming post. You can tell we found our subject, covering most of her face with smoke, then we used the inspiration from those jumping umbrella shots. You know what? Fuck it, I'll put one or two here so you can see how it turned out.

This was for a superbowl spot that I can't really talk about except to say that we did not win this job. The most frustrating part of marketing/commercial directing is pouring your heart and soul, as well as all of your free time that week, into an elaborate proposal, only to have an executive tell you: "I don't know if it's on brand". This is the reason I'm starting my own brand in January, but more on that later ;)

This moodboard is comprised of images I shot when were trying to close another shoot. We were stealing inspiration from ourselves, but we ended up applying it to the Sofia Vergara shoot.

The above two moodboards were going to be the sickest spot ever. We were going to have a Lexus speeding through an art gallery, breaking shit, while a live orchestra played and everything was going to be perfectly on beat. Then the car was going to race outside and powerslide next to the orchestra. It was deemed 'too cool' and 'not on brand', also might've been 'too expensive'. Needless to say, we did not get the job.

But we should end on a positive note, right?

This was a proposal for a 15 second spot for the app game Bubble Witch Saga 3. And guess what? We got the job!
