ONLY 20 HOURS to learn anything.................challenge yourself

in #photography7 years ago

So all humans share one common emotional attribute:

Every now and then I want to evolve, in something.

Urge to learn

Okay yes, not all of us are academic junkies so what do I want to learn?
Well, every part of life is something that represent a skill or expertise. Unfortunately we associate "learning" with "academics".

  • So, have you ever wanted to speak another language?
  • Have you ever wanted to become a painter?
  • Perhaps photography is an aspiration skill but the technical seem to difficult?
  • Do you want to cook up a festive meal but can't even break an eggshell?
  • Ever wanted to play an instrument but get discouraged by its difficulty?

This list is a never ending questionnaire but you get my point. There are so many things in life we urge to get under our belt, but the time it will take to conquer the quest seem far to great

20 hours vs 10,000 hours

A general rule of thumb is that it takes 10,000 hours to learn something. Well, as Josh Kaufman rightly points out, this rule of thumb is the time it takes to become an EXPERT in something.
Lets be honest with each other:

  • I don't want to be the best French speaking person. I only want to be able to have a conversation with a French speaking person.
  • We don't want to become the next Picasso, van Gogh or Rembrandt, we simply want to paint nice pictures that looks pretty.
*You don't want to become an international renound photographer. You simply want to enjoy the outdoors and capture the beautiful moments.
  • No, you don't want the limelight of a Gordon Ramsay or Jamie Oliver, you simply want to treat your friends and family to a beautiful looking and very tasty meal.
  • Also, you don't want to be called a Jimmy Hendrix, Erc Clapton or BB King, you simply want to play some relaxing songs on a guitar or facilitate a sing along around the camp fire.

Get the inspiration

I don't want to take any credit for information in this post and I definately won't do a good job as is done by this speaker.

Watch this talk by Josh Kaufman on how to learn anything in 20 minutes.
IT IS SO INSPIRING.
