GosT — [live music photography//set 1: Hot Lights, Cold Neon]
Many of you have learned over my time here that I'm a huge fan of synth, retro, and horrorwave — and of GosT performing live; lurking in the shadows behind a stack of amps, levitating menacingly and serenely behind a tangle of machines and cables.
I'm definitely still finding my footing on the slopes of a learning curve when it comes to live music photography. The genres that I'm most interested in — metal and electronic — tend to have some of the most frenetic movement, lighting, and performances. Insane flashes and blinding backlights, inconsistent smoke and flames, artists running at full tilt and smashing into each other or coercing wild masses of fans into a frenzy... it's a lot different than standing on a mountain and attempting to capture the horizon, that's for sure.
Honestly? I fucking love it.
I can see a ton of places where I've not managed colour and exposure properly, but truthfully, somehow I don't care. (well, I do, but you know) There's something to be said for standing on the stage with or at the feet of someone pouring their heart and soul out to a crowd who are all feeding on that crackling energy and returning it in electric waves. My hair always stands on end when I get the chance to experience moments like these, but again, I'm a big live music buff to begin with.
Here's someone's video of the actual show I photographed these at, at the exact time of the stage lighting firing in these hot bursts of cold neon. How damn cool is the internet?!
Like any music, GosT won't be for everyone... but if you love an incredible show and a bit of jarring dissonance and eighties horror in your music, try this out. (And get a feel for how damn difficult it is to nail this guy down! 📷)
I've been coming back to sorting and editing these photos in small sets, and I'm really proud of the gems I'm finding in here, even if I can't be perfect at the craft right off the bat. I can't wait to look back some day and trace the progression of my photography through these first (dancing crazily) steps.
These photos and words are my own work, inspired by travels all over this pretty blue marble of ours. I hope you like them. 🌶️
Really nice shots. Like how you captured them midair and that last mirror shot is noice.
Checking out some gost now.
honestly, he never frigging stops jumping so it's more coincidence than skill, lol. I don't know HOW he goes that hard for hours at a time. It's insanity.
You are amazing! love the passion you exude, and the love you spread.Thank you for being a great example of pursuing your dreams!
I so needed this today. Thank you, Jesse; you are always a calming breeze.

b'awwwww. Thank you. Some days having someone offer up kindness like this, unprompted, is everything.
I checked out the video , I actually liked it . Need to go listen to the actual songs and check out the production . Sweet write up and pics.
it can get dark and angry; run with it, tortured artist!
I...admit I have never seen GosT....in fact, I've never even heard of GosT. Looks like a freaking cool stage presence though.
you can say it and I can admit it... I have a "type" 😬
Love the photos. I thought the third and fourth photos posted were money shots. The third photo because the lighting looks really cool. The fourth photo captured raw emotion with his body language, even though a mask is covering his face. Great work!
Wow, these are pretty sweet, is that just like a one man band? I honestly think your photos are more captivating than the video, I really like what you captured, especially seeing how that guy can move! I wasn't a huge fan of the music until the breakdown portion after the first minute, then that got my head bangin'. Yea, wow, these photos are actually really awesome, especially that last one.
It's just the one guy. He sets up synth loops and then just goes wild! some of it can be really dissonant and uncomfortable with horror-like vibes which can be offputting, but every now and again it gets soooo crunchy. Admittedly, there are three or four songs I listen to recorded, but being AT the live show, I love EVERYTHING. It's partially the vibe, for sure~
Wow, that's awesome for one person to set that up. I like a little bit of horror vibe music. Some of this was pretty good, like I said around a minute in, I could listen to that more than once lol. Oooo, it's not a heavy song but its called "Dancing with your Ghost" by No Resolve, I think the video and the song are awesome. It's more haunting than horror lol....Yea I can imagine this live show would be pretty sweet!
Awesome show! Makes me remember I don't go to enough industrial shows. Also that my current picture taking device is butt. Yours look great!
