Portulaca Oleracea: Moss Rose with a raindrop on it.

in #photography7 years ago

This succulent ground cover with its wide spread and rose like flowers is native to North Africa, Middle East and India. It is part of the Portulacaceae family and is an annual which is grown as a vegetable or pot herb in some parts of the world and in others it is a weed which grows naturally in the fields.

The Moss Rose stems, flowers and leaves are edible, usually used fresh in salads or cooked. It is high in omega-3 fatty acids and contains vitamin A, C, E, and B, magnesium, calcium, potassium and iron.

*The Purslane serves mostly as a ground-cover, but can be grown in pots or in flower beds. It can reach a height of 45 cm and has a wide spread of 80cm with red, white, yellow, pink and orange blooms throughout summer.

It is a fast-growing herbaceous succulent with multiple smooth red stems and a single taproot. The leaves are clustered, dark green, oval and fleshy. Each leave stores quite a bit of water and the plant is self-fertile.

It thrives in full sun, tropical/warm climates with annual rainfalls of about 1 000mm and well-drained soil. This plant can tolerate dry climates too but then the foliage quality will not be as good.

Happy Gardening!!

Beautiful pictures as always, the flowers look divine. I didn't know they were edible, I guess we learn something new everyday-Thanks for sharing :)

Thank you practicaleric, this is the plus side of steemit and why I am still here.

amazing flower garden. i have some plants in my city apartment. gotta work with what you get. what really cracks me up is the saying " dont wait for someone to bring you flowers. plant your own garden and decorate your soul. "
it reminds me of me and my situation. my husband bought me flowers once in 10 years lol , and to my disbelieve, i thought his client got him the flower basket and he bought it home and gave it to me. but he claims he bought it with his own money for me ,😅😅. therefore i buy and plant my flowers in my city apartment. i adore them whenever i can. sorry just wanted to share that with u . amazing flowers and amazing photos and really wonderful saying.. keep it up.

Thank you for your kind words. I know how you feel, I have been with my ex for the past 23 years (yes I know it is crazy but I cannot let the man go, have 4 children with him - Been divorced from him for 10 years and married for 13) and I can count on one hand how many times I received flowers. Never on special occasions like the birth of my children and I know how much it hurts not to be appreciated. To look at the bright side, when he did bring me flowers it would be Cosmos from the field or Sunflowers which I adore just as much as bought flowers. Go adore your apartment with flowers because they do lift the spirit and make you happy.

I guess I got quite a long way to go to actually be able to count past one lol. but yea flowers do raise ones spirits. much love. this is me sharing the love ✌15251779674721267940776.jpg

haha we are middle of some awsone and beauteous flowers. Flowers are evrywhere. @crazymumzysa believe me i have no word for appreciation just want to say these glittering and stunning flowers are awsome.

Aquí en Venezuela, se encuentra esta planta, es silvestre, se usa para consumo de los Morrocoyes. A pesar de los beneficios y nutrientes para el humano, no se come, ya sea por la ignorancia de valor nutritivo. interesante Post.
