American Buffalo on the Prairies

in #photofeed6 years ago (edited)

After a couple of centuries absence, wild American bison or American buffalo (Bison bison) can be seen to roam some small patches of the prairies in the Midwest once more. While once numbering 20 to 30 million across the endless American prairies, the number of bison remaining alive in North America declined to as low as 541 individual animals after the great slaughter during the 1800s.

It is hard not to be impressed by the sheer size of these animals when you see them up close with males weighing up to 1 tonne. All the more impressive when you consider that they can run 35–40 mph (56–64 km/h) and jump close to 6 ft (1.8 m) vertically when agitated.

In 2015 Illinois saw its first wild bison calf in nearly 200 years after one was born to a reintroduced herd at Nachusa Grasslands.

Hello friend @intrepidphotos wonderful wildlife photography 👍 keep posting such excellent photos

oh such beautiful animals 👍🏻 have a wonderful day!

Thanks. Same to you!

That looks like a nice little here, there. Were there many calves? The herd at Minneopa State Park here in MN has about five.

I am not sure exactly how many they had this year.

I'm surprised that thing could get off the ground at all never mind jump 2m :O

The small ones are still cute even if they are the size of small cars XD And that sign cracked me up.

Ha yes hard to imagine.

I've always been fascinated by the American buffalo, and I'm sorry that because of us humans they have been decimated.

Yes but the good news is they are coming back.

Love this! Bison are one of my favorite animals!

So majestic! Beautiful.

They are indeed

it was a good news for animal lovers, Thank q for sharing search information about American buffalo (bison). I am going to google about it.

Glad you enjoyed the post.

Such beautiful creatures. I could lose track of time just looking at them graze.
