Well, I suppose that's why they didn't supply you with cardboard boxes full of small styrofoam nuggets, known to me as packing peanuts, because they are shaped, and sized, about like a peanut.
The straps don't need to support the whole mass, just keep a bit of pressure on to keep it stable. Fact: you didn't need the extra hassle, you just got it done.
