David Chalmers' "Hard Problem"
Animals can do what we do. They can use sign language, tools and their society is eerily similar to our own. But they are not conscious. They are not trying to solve David Chalmers' "hard problem;" they are not trying to find out--on top of instinctive behavior--the purpose of "reflection" or "contemplation." We alone, as humans, have this directive hard-coded into our DNA, somehow. We all do it. We paint pictures, tell stories and imagine we can know the future. We alone.
