I feel guilty about everything, what do I do?

At this point, I want to express that the value of guilt is mainly related to the cultural framework in which we find ourselves and, specifically, to the moral value in which we have been educated. In fact, anthropologists and sociologists have proposed numerous hypotheses, why women seem more "condemned" to suffer guilt than men, and why some men more than others.

The truth is that the causes of this feeling of unjustified guilt, is related to a struggle between established values and opposition to one's common sense, which pushes us to act in a certain way.

Cultural guilt: how to avoid it

Although guilt is an essential feeling for the proper functioning of social paradigms - avoids aggressive behavior with people in situations of vulnerability, injustices of any kind -, being a cultural construction based on the own moral consequences or punitive external not It is infallible, and sometimes it can happen, that individuals who show more sensitivity to certain injustices, are manipulated by others to achieve something knowing that these people have very high levels of empathy in this regard.

The consequences can be very serious for the self-esteem of who suffers from this extreme cultural guilt, and it has to put an end immediately. These are some of the procedures that the eternal culprit has to eliminate from his life:

  • Goodbye to toxic people: These individuals take advantage of this excess sensitivity to the environment to achieve their own ends or to release part of the frustration that afflicts them. A person with a tendency to feel guilty in an irrational way should stay away from these subjects who will only get their state of anxiety to increase.
  • Mental exercises of relativization of the conflict: By means of this technique the user consisting in visualizing the situation from an external prism, the person will obtain that these problems do not turn into an enormous conflict in his mind.

If not, that feeling of injustice, of not doing enough and of frustration can lead to more serious neurotic states.

  • Freedom from responsibility: The writer Fiodor Dostoevsky claimed that "it is my fault, my personal fault, if the world goes wrong." This tormented author in whose works reveals a great psychological value gave this phrase the main key to not feel guilty about everything. The person suffering from constant guilt must learn to accept the world as it is regardless of how it is.
  • Search causes in psychotherapy: Although in many cases it is not necessary since you can put an end to guilt when the person is released from that responsibility that binds him to the world, in some it has its roots in the past childhood and unresolved conflicts can be found.

To all these when you feel guilty of what you usually do.

Ok.. How do you do to eliminate the guilt that does not let you sleep ...?

Not having any guilt is a sign of sociopathy or narcissistic personality disorder. a little guilt is a positive thing. It is a sign of that a person's conscience is still alive. But if you feel guilty all the time, it is called guilt complex, when a person blames him/herself of wrongs they didn't do actually. It happens to over-sensitive people. It can be cured when you analyse the situation critically, and find that you have no fault in what has happened.

Overcoming guilt sometimes is hard but it is important to consider that feeling guilty does nothing but depression. It's OK to wallow in guilt for sometime but you would have to let go in the end. The future depends on moving on.
