The dark side of strength (psychological)
The Star Wars saga has become living history. With more or less acceptance, the release of each film has been a great event. And is that this small universe has the support of millions of fans who, surely, would like to find strength and become, over time, in Jedi. But, as in life itself, not everyone accepts light and some end up going over to the dark side.
In our reality, moving to the dark side can be understood as the equivalent of radicalization and, given that radicalization is a group process, social psychology has much to say about the acceptance of the dark side of force. A particular case that we can find in the saga is that of Anakin Skywalker. Contrary to popular opinion, those who go to the dark side, have no less study, have fewer resources and much less suffer from mental problems, as in reality. Going to the dark side implies a combination of factors that are explained below.
The need to be important
Performing an action requires that there is a motivation towards an objective. The main thing is that a need arises and we propose a goal that can meet that need. Then the motivation that will lead to the action will appear. In the case of dark force, the objective is importance. The motivation to be someone important, to make a difference, to be "someone".
This important search motivation can be reawakened in three different ways. One of them is through the loss of importance. The humiliation, like the one that Anakin Skywalker felt when he was a slave, when the Jedi rejected him or when he heard about his mother's murder, is an important factor when it comes to awakening the search for importance as they are moments in which it occurs an awareness of the loss of it.
"The fear of loss a path to the dark side is."
-Yoda teacher-
Another way to awaken the search for importance is the perception that there is a threat to importance. Kylo Ren, as shown by the last film in the series, understands that Luke Skywalker is a threat. From Kylo Ren's point of view, Luke wanted to prevent him from becoming a Jedi and gain importance.
The last one is before the opportunity to gain importance. When the opportunity to gain importance is presented the search motivation wakes up. A case is found in Senator Palpatin, also known as Darth Sidious, who murdered his father to become supreme chancellor while becoming the dark lord of the Sith.
What the sith tell us
However, the need to be important is not going to lead to the dark side. Once the motivation is aroused, our attention will be directed towards the medium to achieve importance. To the question "how do I become important / more important?" Will answer the ideology, the narrative. While the Jedi do not encourage violence as a means of gaining importance, the Siths do.
Darth Sidious counted that Darth Plagueis was so powerful that he could create life and even prevent the beings he cared about from dying. But how to get it? Using violence With his speech, the Sith order promotes the use of violence as the only means to become important. As Darth Vader said: "You underestimate the power of the dark side, if you do not fight ... you will find your destiny".
Bad companies on the dark side
Finally, a factor that unites the motivation with ideology is missing. This resides in the group. One alone can be important in the eyes of others so you need a group that accepts and makes you feel important. In addition, as we previously commented, that group must have an ideology that encourages violence. In the world of Star Wars it is easy to identify that group as the order of the Sith.
Siths offer to become someone very important. They offer unimaginable power, that of the dark side of force. Once inside their group, social pressure will lead people to eventually merge their personality with the Sith identity. As the blind dunk Chirrut Îmwe said: "I am one with strength and strength is with me". Belonging to the group of the Jedi or the Sith implies part of something bigger, the only difference is going to be the narrative of the group, which is peaceful, like that of the Jedi, or supports violence, like that of the Sith.
"When I'm close to you, my mind is not mine anymore."
-Anakin Skywalker-
On the dark side there are also emotions
Finally, emotions also play a role in the process that leads people to the dark side. The dark side of strength is closely related to negative emotions. Master Yoda explains it to us in this sentence: "Fear leads to anger, anger leads to hatred, hatred leads to suffering and suffering to the dark side". Although the relationship between emotions is not lacking in coherence, the ANCODI hypothesis tells us that the emotions that Yoda mentions are not the correct ones.
"Fear, anger, aggressiveness, the dark side they are. If one day your life rules, forever your destiny will dominate. "
-Yoda teacher-
For a person to opt for the dark side, it is more feasible to have a combination of three emotions, rather than a succession of emotions. In this way, the first emotion that would appear would be the anger that would arise from the injustice and would go towards whoever was considered guilty. Anger would lead to contempt, denial and humiliation of the other. Finally the disgust would appear, which would lead to the dark side, which implies that the solution is to eliminate the other.
As we have seen, in order to reach the dark side, we do not have to follow a path that gradually turns us into radicals. To accept the dark side of force, a combination of factors must occur. As if it were a puzzle, the moment we put on the last piece we have already accepted the dark side of the force. As we presume that Master Yoda would say: powerful psychology is strength, beware of your dark side you must have. And it is that the mind, like psychology, is wonderful.
Excellent post! I've always wished they would dwell more with balance with the force in the movies, though it seems like they might go that direction.
If you are curious check out the episodes "Overlords" "Alter of Mortis" and "Ghost of Mortis" episodes on the cartoon network Clone Wars series. It has some great insights into the light and dark sides and balance of the force with amazing archetypical themes and symbolism.
thanks for the advice..
What an interesting analysis!!
I always kinda felt that Kylo Ren didn't have enough reasons to turn into such a radical - was it really because Luke was threatening his importance or was it a cry for help and attention since his parents were always busy with everythig else...?
Anyway, thanks for sharing, always love my daily digest of psychology :)
I appreciate your interest in my publications very soon you will be well rewarded ...
