Confronting Sophistry - Ep. 2 : Socrates on Trial, Cognitive Dissonance, and False Dichotomy

in #philosophy8 years ago (edited)

Confronting Sophistry is a video series about critical thinking, self-education and deconstructing the techniques of those who seek to control our mental processes.

In this episode, host and producer Jeff DeRiso re-tells Plato's Apology, a story of Socrates on trial for...well, confronting sophistry. He also discusses what this story illustrates about the way society works to this day, including the concepts of cognitive dissonance and false dichotomy.

Cognitive Dissonance:

The discomfort experienced by an individual who holds two or more contradictory beliefs, ideas, or values at the same time.

False Dichotomy:

Here is a logical construction of the false dichotomy fallacy:

  • Person X and Person Y have a disagreement.
  • Person X is proven to be incorrect.
  • Therefore, Person Y must be correct.

Hi there! Would you be willing to verify that this is indeed your video? Just a simple link back from your YouTube channel to Steemit would do. Thanks!
