Going by ranking, speeches by Socrate(circa 4th century BC), Patrick Henry(1775), Fredrick Douglas (1852), Abraham Lincoln (1863), Susan Anthony(1873), Winston Churchill(1940), John F.Kennedy(1961), Martin Luther King Jr (1963), Lyndon B. Johnson(1965), Ronald Reagan(1987), Jawaharlal Nehru(1947) and Nelson Mandela(1964) have been rated amongst the greatest speeches in history. No matter how their speeches were interpreted, they contain passion, commitment and power. For instance, Socrate was trying to defend himself before a jury of his peers in Athens but he did not succeed in saving his life but it has since become the soul and spirit of the discipline of philosophy. Infact, his speeches foregrounds the limitations of cognition and the relative value of life and death. The speeches presents humanity with a dilemma.

PATRICK HENRY - He rejected the idea of buying life and peace at the price of 'CHAINS AND SLAVERY' before a Richmond Church congregation.

In his 263 words speech delivered in three minutes Abraham Lincoln argued that America was 'Conceived in liberty and dedicated the proposition that all men are not created equal'.

Churchill encouraged his people :' You may have to fight when there is no hope of victory, because it is better to perish than to live as slaves.
