PATRON SAINT OF THE DAY: For Philadelphia
The 5th of January is the feast of Saint John Neumann.
Born in Bohemia in 1811, John immigrated to the US in 1836 with nothing but the clothes he had on and one dollar. He was ordained in the same year and later became the fourth bishop of Philadelphia in 1852 until his death in 1860.
While bishop, he established the first area parochial school system and on average he opened a new parish every month.
Saint John Neumann, ora pro nobis!
