Taking care of skin problems with Bravecto
I talk about this product so much it starts to feel like the sponsor us, but unfortunately they do not. I am sure they do something but at the end of the day they are a company and making money is their prime / only objective.
I am really happy that this product exists though because it makes our fight against a variety of parasites much easier. In the past it was quite complicated to apply specialized medicated soaps or salves to animals to deal with this problem, and the drops that you put on the back of a dog's neck at your home is easy enough because you can monitor them but in the outdoors where most of the dogs are strays, that chemical dollup stands a good chance of being licked off by other dogs and this can cause great harm.
These things apparently taste really good, so almost all of the dogs aside from the surprisingly finicky eaters will gobble it up to the point where the only difficult part for us is recording who has received one already so that we don't accidentally double-dose them. We keep really good records so this has only happened a time or two and no, there is no chance of OD'ing on these, the dog would have to eat an entire box of them for there to be even a small chance of that.
If you live in a country with stray dogs, which is most countries, you have likely seen many dogs with patches of missing fur and most of the time this is mange, a very small parasite that lives in the hair follicles and eventually destroys that follicle, then moves onto another one until the process has completed over the entire dog. The parasite itself doesn't spread disease, but it itches like crazy and dogs will not stop scratching something just because it removes the skin. The dog will keep scratching until there is an open would inflicted by its own paws, then the real danger of infection and also bloodborne parasites set in and this is what causes a lot of pain and death.
Just one little treat kills fleas, ticks, mange, and a wide variety of internal parasites as well for up to 4 months. We have tested this time theory because we are skeptical of company claims and as it turns out, that is about exactly right. The duration of its effectiveness varies depending on heat, humidity, and rain, but by our meticulous records the effect generally wears off after about 3 months. The good news is one of these tablets costs less than $1 so we don't mind re-applying.
Most dogs will just eat the medicine in its raw form but for fussy fellas like this one, a little bit of smeared in wet dog food does the trick every time.
Just like baby humans, dogs don't like to take their medicine even though it is helping them. I can't believe that it took dog pharmaceutical companies so long to figure out that if they make it taste good, dogs will willingly eat it. I am sure all pet owners out there have experienced the frustration of trying to wrap a table in ham or hide it in some peanut butter only to have the dog magically work its way around both and not actually consume the pill.
If you live somewhere that has a dog missing hair, it is almost certainly from mange, and I strongly recommend that you go to a pet shop and buy one of these very cheap chew-able medications. If they don't have Bravecto where you live, any product containing Fluralaner in it does the same thing. It is just easier if it is done inside of a dog treat, the tablets are too difficult to administer especially if it with a dog you don't own. NEVER attempt to force feed a stray medication, if it doesn't take it willingly, leave it alone. Doing otherwise is a fantastic way to get bitten, and that is never good.
