#peopleevents 3/365 - Deportation of the Crimean Tatar people.
Early in the morning at 03:00 on May 18, 1944 the deportation of the Crimean-Tatar people began, ended on May 20, 1944. The deportees were given up to 30 minutes. 32 thousand employees of the NKVD participated in the deportation. 67 train trains were used for transportation. Who could not go or resist was shot on the spot. Over 2 days from the Crimea, 191 044 people were expelled to special settlements in Uzbekistan. Another 5,989 people were arrested and charged with cooperation with the Germans during the war. All of them got into the Gulag.
About 8,000 people were killed during the move. The causes of death are thirst and typhus. Up to 88,000 people died in the first three years after relocation from hunger, malnutrition and disease. After the war in 1945-1946, another 8,995 Crimean Tatars - veterans of the war were exiled. Until 1956, the Crimean Tatars had the status of special settlers and were limited in rights. Until 1957, the Crimean Tatar language was banned. April 28, 1956 Crimean Tatars were released from special settlements, but without the right to return to their homeland. Only in 1989, returning home - in the Crimea became possible. When in the reign of Gorbachev the deportation was condemned and found illegal and criminal.
