'Hotel Mumbai' Terror Mastermind Sentenced to 10 Years in Prison

The mastermind of the 'Hotel Mumbai' terror attack, Hafiz Saeed, was sentenced to 10 years in prison by an anti-terrorism court in Lahore, Pakistan, in two terror financing cases. This is the second verdict after Hafiz Saeed was sentenced to 11 years in another terror financing case last February.

"The Lahore Anti-terrorism Court (ATC) on Thursday convicted four Jamat-ud-Dawa leaders, including its chairman Hafiz Saeed, in two more cases," a court official was quoted as saying by the Hindustan Times, Thursday, November 19, 2020.

Hafiz Saeed is the chairman of Jamaat-ud-Dawa (JuD), a wing organization for the Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) terror group. He is suspected of plotting a series of terror in the city of Mumbai on November 28, 2008. The action which took place at several points in Mumbai, including the Taj Hotel, which is the background for the film Hotel Mumbai, killed 166 people. Six of them were citizens of the United States.

He is also recognized as a "global terrorist" by both the United Nations and the US, who awarded a US $ 10 million prize for his head.

Hafiz Saeed was arrested in Pakistan in July last year in connection with terror financing cases after international pressure was placed on Pakistan not to protect terrorists.

Currently, Hafiz Saeed is being held at the high-security Kot Lakhpat prison in Lahore.

Apart from Hafiz Saeed, two of his close aides, Zafar Iqbal and Yahya Mujahid, were sentenced to 10 and a half years each. Meanwhile his brother-in-law, Abdul Rehman Makki, was sentenced to six months in prison.

A total of 41 cases have been registered by Pakistan's Counter Terrorism Department against JuD leaders. A total of 24 cases have been decided while the rest are pending in the ATC court.

The four cases involving Hafiz Saeed have been decided so far.
