Parental leave in America

in #paternity8 years ago

Parenting is one of the most challenging and rewarding experiences that life offers; governments around the world have supported maternity leave for women, but what about young men?

There are very few companies that provides employees paternity leave which gives them the possibility to take it during the first year. These companies are Netflix, Adobe, Apple, Facebook, Microsoft, Reddit, Twitter, Yahoo and Amazon.

As of today, there isn’t any mandatory policy from the government or any other agencies that require to provide a paid parental leave; this makes businesses have a complete control on deciding what benefits to provide to their employees.

Megan Hologon (2015) describes that in countries such as, “Korea receives 52.6 weeks paid paternity leave and they make on average 31 percent of their income. Japan can spend 52 weeks at home with a new baby and they make on average 58.4 of their income. France enjoys 28 weeks of paid time at home with their babies and they make on average 24.2 percent of their income and Norwegian fathers receive 14 weeks of paid paternity leave and they make on average 90.8 percent of their income” (Hologon, 2015).

In summary, parental leave is important for the involvement of children lives. Our government should also be concerned on how this affects children’s future. What are your thoughts?
