My house is brick....Powder is only a danger if it is contained, in a fire it simply burns. They put it in plastic for this reason.

Kegs contain the burn enough for a low level boom, but Hollywood always makes the boom huge....
The spurt of smoke on the side of a flintlock is a non-contained powder burn.
