Explain ONO To Me Like I’m 5
We know that very few people actually read technical White Papers.
This is written for people who want to know what ONO is and what makes it different from other social media networks, but don’t have 10 hours to spend delving into our White Paper.
We will start out with the features we think will be most useful to people, but this is by no means a thorough article. For anyone who wants the full details, the ONO White Paper exists for that reason.
ONO dApp
ONO exists now as an Android and iOS dApp and is being tested on the Chinese market. The international version will be released in about one month. A dApp is like an App, except that the letter “d” stands for “decentralized”. You don’t need to get hung up on this point, as dApps work just like apps you’re familiar with like Twitter, Facebook, etc. Later, ONO will have a desktop version, but we don’t know the exact release date yet.
When you are using the mobile ONO dApp, you can customize the settings to meet your personal needs.

This means that you can decide if you want advertising to appear on your page, or not.
This also means you can add DIY customized things like stickers and other functions. There is an app store within ONO where you can go to add the things you like to your own ONO dApp. This app store is called My Box. This also means that you can design your own stickers, and add them to your ONO dApp. If you are familiar with Telegram, then you will find something similar as far as the DIY aspect of custom stickers. The ONO dApp is a lot like a cross between Twitter and Telegram, but with way more DIY functionality.
Also, if you don’t like certain features, you can remove them from your ONO dApp. All the posts you make in ONO can be written for your friends or the general public. It’s your choice who sees your content.
The ONO dApp also has instant messaging, so you can text your friends private messages.
End-to end encrypted messaging will come with the international version, which is tentatively set to release in a month.
We think our advertising model is something that users will like because in ONO, users are the ones who decide if they want ads or not, and the users will be the ones who are paid directly by these advertisers, in ONO’s native token, the ONOT.
Because ONO launched just a little over two weeks ago, many of these functions will need time to develop, as the ecosystem has be created in an organic fashion. There are currently over 100,000 people who have registered in ONO, and right now this is for the Chinese market. As we mentioned, English and other speakers will have the international version in about a month, and it will be Android and iOS, with desktop coming later.

Right now, the ONO dApp is fast, according to users, and it works well, so well in fact that you will not be aware of the fact that it is a blockchain-based dApp.
In fact we have good news for everyone who is not familiar with blockchain technology. You don’t have to know anything about blockchain technology in order to use the ONO dApp. It’s designed for every day users, and for people who have never experienced blockchain tech before.
It’s like this: when you get into your car, you don’t need to know every detail about how the mechanics of the engine work in order to drive it.
The same can be said for the ONO dApp. We designed it so that anyone can easily use it and have a deeper social experience with it. We are making this for people, for all human beings. We think people should be able to decide if they want ads or not. People who do not like or want advertisements in their feed can opt out of all ads and have their own customizable experience, free of the ads. We think people should be in control of their own data, too.
And for those people who do not mind ads, we think the ad revenue should go to those users. Users will decide what kind of ads they want to be associated with, and what kind of ads they do not want to be associated with. We think this is the right way to do advertising, with users in control of their data, their feeds and the kind of things they want to see. We know that users should receive rewards for their attention, that is why we have a reward system.
Our system does not rely on selling users’ data, and therefore, we have no need to collect our users’ data.
We are building ONO for people, and the founder herself has made this very clear that she is building a social network that people want, need and deserve. She’s building something that she also desires in social media. This is a very important point. She and her team are devoted to fulfilling this mission.
What we are doing is removing the middleman from the users and the advertising revenue. To learn more about this system, read our white paper: https://steemit.com/ono/@onosocial/ono-white-paper-a-social-network-launching-on-eos
Our blockchain system allows us to re-imagine a new token economy that finally gets rid of the middlemen. We want to grow with you, and we also need you to help us make a new decentralized social network that human beings like and love. We believe in the concept of constant improvement, and we look forward to you helping us build ONO. ONO is a mix of centralized and decentralized elements. We think that blending the two gives the most freedom to people, and also gives the best user experience.
If you would like to see a demo of the ONO dApp from the founder and CEO of ONO, Ke Xu, we have it for you:
If you feel inspired and want to help us build the social ecosystem of ONO, please reach out to use in the English Telegram channel. Our volunteers, from around the world are there ready to answer your questions and help you learn more about our dApp. The one question that we receive regularly, though, is this:
“When is the airdrop?”
Right now there is no airdop. The ONO team is still in discussion mode. If we decide to have an airdrop, we will officially announce it on all our social channels.
ONO uses an invitation code system for the first generation users who will be building out the social fabric of the ONO ecosystem. If you’re a community builder, we need you. ONO is only as good as the people building it. People who are inspired by our mission are greatly encouraged to visit our Telegram channel, reach out and make their intentions known. Well done, this is very useful to reach a large audience!!!
good, thanks for your compliment.
Very useful for people new to ONO, I resteemed for visibility!
Thank you @juliakponsford! We are spreading the word.
I now understand what Ono is. Thanks @onosocial
This is an excellent way of explaining what Ono is
Just like anything technical and innovative, the need for an explanation in plain speak with relatable anecdotes is so important! You're making great posts just like this as well, @maverickinvictus, so keep up the great work!
Very nicely simplified. I am unfortunately one of those people that doesn't have time to ready the whitepaper although I am very interested in the project. One question though, is the live version in China already running on a blockchain or is it centralised in some manor till The EOS blockchain starts up?
I think it runs on the eos testnet, please correct me if I'm wrong!?
We are currently on the EOS testnet, yes! There is an initial version running in China to about 100k users, called "Adventurers." They are testing the app, providing feedback, and working with the ONO team to improve the app.
That's great, so the transition to Eos should be nice and smooth. Wishing you all success.
Now I finally get it, haha - thanks for the thorough guide!
Thank you!! Sharing this for sure.

Looking forward to the release of the international version.
Thanks for this explanation. It was very easy to read and understand and I really like the idea. I’m sure all of us are rooting for a great dApp social platform that can help take some of the power away from Facebook and chip into the monopoly. I’m interested in learning more about the mechanics of the token and what gives it monetary value. I did read section 4 of the white paper and I think I get the general premise of what you’re saying with the ginger anecdote, but I’m always cautious about native tokens. Obviously I believe that internal currencies can work or else Steemit wouldn’t function, but that’s because Steemit is run on Steem itself and your success on the platform relies on you investing in it and holding it either through content creation or through direct monetary investment. So I’m curious to know if there’s an equivalent way that people will be incentivized to hold ONOT.
The value of ONOT will be created organically through creating a social media network where people come first. It will take time, and so the early builders of ONO are critical to building the social fabric.
