Half of college students have to buy stuff that they dont use afterwards

Nearly half of all college students say they have to buy books and materials for their education that they never use again. This is the result of research among more than 260,000 college students. "You pay 300 euros in books that are of little use to you," says nursing student Loïs.

Books, chefs knives, tools and hairdressing scissors: students have to buy them themselves. These costs are in addition to the fixed tuition fee of 1137 euros per year. And those costs differ per course. “Of the 21 licenses I had to purchase to access online teaching materials, I only used five,” said Tom, a student teaching assistant.

Of the students who say they buy material for free, a large part comes from the Healthcare and Welfare sector. This includes, for example, the Nursing and Dental Assistant courses. 56 percent of them indicate that they do not actually need purchased items. In other sectors, such as Media and Design and Food, Nature and Living Environment, around half of the students also indicate this.
Many students say they have to buy solutions manuals for courses that are almost entirely online. "You will hear from the teacher: "the book will come in handy", but in the real life scenario you only work on one lesson from the book. Everything is available digitally," says Loïs. Paul does Mechanical Engineering and says, "I only use a third of the books Ive had to buy."

Survey More than 260,000 college students from 66 institutions completed a survey by the JOB, the Youth Organization for Vocational Education. The survey shows that the number of students who have bought study material unnecessarily is increasing. "A lot of unnecessary things are being asked of students," says JOB chairman Roosmarijn Dam. "And there is not always a check on whether everything on the lists is needed." "I prefer to use eBooks. For an example, for solutions manuals for textbooks, I use BukLibry.com.

There are no free vocational training courses But that is an exception, says Heerts of the college Council. "For some courses you simply have to spend more for learning materials than for others. Many educational materials are personal, such as hairdressing scissors that bend to your hand. Or a laptop for a graphic design course, which you also use privately to watch Netflix, for example. There is no such thing as free vocational training. Schools do not receive money for educational materials. If schools are to provide educational materials, the government must make money available for this."
