KAMIKAZE OFFROAD TRAIL REPORT - w/pics - Moab Area

I'm gonna start putting up some trail reports for offroad trails I do. Here's a short one in southern Utah. I'll focus more on the pictures aspect and share a few thoughts about difficulty and of course kinds of photo-ops. It's located over by the needles overlook.

Read more about it here

TRAIL IS SHORT

With stops, plenty of pictures 3 trucks and our first time at the location it took just 1hr there and back.

It's a bit tight but nothing too scratchy and there are some fast portions you can rally through if you desire. But others will just prefer a regular pace.

TWO MEMORABLE OBSTACLES

They're easier than they look... but they're fun because they provide some good photo ops

These steps were much easier than we expected even with a bit of snow on them. They're steep, not as steep as the next obstacle... they also didn't require any spotting or lockers for us.

SECOND SPOT

This is the cool photogenic spot... i didn't mind it too much I thought it was pretty fun. It is pretty exposed so luckily no snow. If it had been snowy we would have been singing a different story and I would have not done it. But it's west facing and exposed so likely snow rarely stays there. The last spot is north facing so snow will be there more often in winter months.

We did have spotters because it was our first time and because it's so steep it's sometimes hard to see the ground over the hood. I'd still want a spotter the next time around but I think it was easier than expected and actually easier to see over the hood than expected.

Going up there are spots where there is some loose rock that may need a spotter to help get past because at that angle you need good traction but some trucks didn't have a problem.

TIGHT SPOT

Ok admittedly not very tight at all... but hey might as well mention it. The full size in the group had zero probelm getting through just being a little extra observant.

THE VIEW

To be honest it has the same sort of overlook as many other spots around. It's westward and a tad south west.
It's a solid view but not better than the others so I'd go mostly for the cool photo ops of the trucks on the hill than i would for the view.

Of course we were there mid-morning so it's not super fair to the location. There are a couple interesting features to focus on.

RECAP and RECOMENDATIONS

It's short and sweet with one really memorable and photogenic section. The view is solid for pictures but nothing better than the other views in the area. I'll probably take people on it in the future because it's only 1hr and it looks harder than it is which always makes you look cool. You really need to know the trail number and possibly mile marker. The trail is #64 so look out for that sign.

I don't think you'd need a lift but you for sure need a vehicle with 4wd LOW as getting up the really steep parts and possibly having some loose stuff on the way up will be very nice. I don't think you'd need bigger tires or lockers or crazy amounts of experience but I'd also not do it alone (as you shouldn't do most trails alone of course) but this one for sure, you'll want a spotter on the big hill. Some sites give it a difficult rating... I give it a difficult medium... meaning it's a medium difficulty but towards the higher end of medium.

I think the biggest danger is not going down this hill at a good angle ... this picture above is at the very end but it's about as angled as I'd feel comfortable with. It looks worse than it is in the picture but you want to head down pretty straight down and just not make any beginner mistakes so with that in mind not for a beginner unless you have some experienced folks with you.

Also note some passengers may love it and some may get out and walk for that portion.

Come to think of it... this trail is pretty much memorable for this first spot. It's kind of like a one tricky pony... but I still liked it and would do it again... IF... i were in the area.

Nice @jarvie! I dig seeing the 4x4 photos and hearing the story. My Pathfinder isn't the most trail ready ride but it handles most of the ones I want to go down here in Tahoe. The snow has finally melted and it's that season where I can start exploring again! Might go scout a wildflower spot today down a hopefully muddy road... Have fun out there!

Very nice... one of these days i'll make my way over there to hang with you and my friend Karen.

I'd be happy to be a "tour guide" if you do make it out here... Cheers!

Great shots and blog.
