Diving 200 mi offshore

in #ocean7 years ago

As I stood on the fantail of the RCN auxiliary tug St. Antony, ready to jump into the Pacific Ocean my imagination ran wild.8609-03 St.Anthony.jpg

I could see the Great White just waiting for me, jaws wide open.

I had the opportunity to be Chief Diver on two trips out to the Cobb Sea Mount. Dr. Di Jones of Simon Fraser University wanted to place a sediment trap on the seafloor in order to sample deep ocean sediment.

Over 200 miles off the coast of Washington this guyot ( a flat topped undersea volcano) rises up over 2000 M (1.3 miles) from the seafloor to 160' (50 M) beneath the surface.
We did see sharks but they kept their distance only occasionally ghosting in from the deep blue.
Like this diver coming down to join me.

The following video is not mine but show what it was like.

I have some video footage but cannot afford to get it scanned. Anyone in Canada know who can digitize 1" reel to reel cheaply?

Soy nuevo en Steemit, sería de mucha ayuda si me sigues y votas en mi blog. @Fyahconde Revisa mi contenido ... poco a poco lo iré cargando más y más.

Éxito y Mil Bendiciones para todos.

Muchias gracias, Keep going down.

Me too I like diving

Me too, it is better to paid as well. lol

The film was a blast to the past for me; was in high school. Jacques Cousteau was very popular then. The music was typical, too. When was your dive?

Yes Cousteau put more bucks in my pocket the anyone else. SCUBA was very popular in the 70's and 80's and Silent World was watched by millions. This dive was in 1975 but may have been a year or so later, it was a long time ago.

Nice ship

Looks cool but just an old navy tug.

Diving is a very interesting.

Just about all my life was about. Fun, adventure, learning and exploring. The new science and technologies coming out every day boggles my mind.

You have an amazing life!

I was lucky. I got into diving when I was young and grew up with the industry. Diving got very popular, I alone probably taught over 1000 people.

This post has received gratitude of 5.60 % from @appreciator thanks to: @oldmariner.

Dam! I'm jealous, diving a spot like that is a dream of mine. I would give just about anything to get a chance to photograph any sea mount.

As for digitizing 1" reel I will ask around. I'd love to see that footage.

Thanks for sharing man.

I must say, that trip ranks way in the 'glad I did it' area. Our equipment was pretty crude, we did not even have UW lights. From what I hear now daggers have scraped it bare.

nice shoot....great job

Thanks, but damm it was cold.
