For people that live with two oceans within 1 hours drive as I do (Pacific and Atlantic or Caribbean), the facts of the oceans depth never really comes to mind, so I thought I would do some research about this topic.

We know or may not know that 75% of the planet earth is covered with water.

The present known depth of the ocean is 10,994 metres, 10,994 kilometres (36,069 feet, 6.83125 Miles) (keep this # in mind)

So here are some facts about the known depth of the oceans.

40 metres below the surface is the maximum depth allowed for recreational scuba diving

At 93 metres down is where the wreck of the Lusitania was discovered.

At 100 metres diving can become become seriously fatal because of decompression sickness.

A gentleman named Herbert Nitsch did a free dive to 214 metres with only one breath of air.

At 332 metres, a scuba diving record set by Ahmed Gabr was done.

443 metres is the height of the Empire State building.

500 metres, the maximum depth of blue whales which are the largest creatures on the planet and the maximum depth that a US class sea wolf nuclear submarine can dive.

535 metres maximum depth that emperor penguins can dive, water pressure at this depth is basically equal to a polar bear standing on a quarter.

830 metres the height of the Burj Khalifa in Dubai (tallest building in the world).

100 metres below is refereed to as the Scary Zone, where light from the surface can no longer go below this point, so all below this is in permanent darkness, water pressure at this point is about equal to standing on the surface of Venus, giant squid lives at this depth.

1200 metres, maximum depth that the leatherneck sea turtle can dive.

1828 metres is the depth of the deepest point of the grand canyon.

At 2000 metres lives the Black Dragon fish, a carnivorous beast that doesn't allow light to enter its stomach.

2250 maximum depth that sperm whales can dive, Colossal squid live here, which can grow to be 14 metres long and weigh up to 750 kilograms with eyes the size of a dinner plate and razor sharp teeth in the middle of their tentacles

3800 metres is the where the wreck of the titanic was discovered.

4000 metres, This area is known as the abyssal zone, water pressure is at 11,000 pounds per square inch, strange alien creatures inhabit this area, such as the fine tooth angler fish-and viper fish.anglerfish.jpg

4267 metres is the average depth of the ocean floor.

4791 metres the wreck of the battleship Bismark, which was sunk in 1942.

6000 metres is the area known as the Hadal zone, name after Hades, water pressure at these depth can be 1,100 times what we experience at the surface, which is equal to an elephant balancing on a postage stamp or a person carrying the weight of 50-747 Boeing jumbo jets.

6500 metres is the maximum depth that DSV (deep sea vehicle) can dive to, this vehicle helped discover the titanic.

8848 metres, is the height of mount Everest

10898 metres, the depth reached by James Cameron by the 2012 challenger mission.

10916 metres, in 1960 two men Don Walsh and Jacques Piccard used their submarine, took 5 hours to descend to this depth, only stayed for 20 minutes and had to ascend again as a window was starting to crack.

10972 metres, the average flight altitude of a commercial jet.

10994 metres, the deepest point that has been discovered , known as the Challenger Deep.
Challenger Deep is located beneath the western Pacific Ocean in the southern end of the Mariana Trench, which runs several hundred kilometers southwest of the U.S. territorial island of Guam.

To date only about 5% of the ocean floor has been studied so there are even deeper area that will be found.

Cheers!
