Beautiful Sunday - THE CARNIVAL WALK
The days are still relatively cold here in Medulin ... but almond trees in bloom spread the scent of springtime all around the old town.
The jester stops to pick up a twig or two ... surrounded by the Corona virus crew ... and you can see the death ... a bit further on the road.
All these characters are here only for the Carnival, a tradition that each year mixes some ancient rituals with the latest actualities. They appeared this morning, seemingly out of nowhere ... and now are wandering around like a stream of colorful ghosts ...
... from house to house ...
... telling jokes and collecting eggs, candies, wine, schnapps and sausages for the party that will be held for the whole village ... and I'm almost telling the truth ... almost, because the people on these photographs are just pretending to do that, and I'm describing the Carnival routine from a few decades ago. Now is organized by some municipal committee, they enter only a few houses, the food and drink will not depend on what they get in this walk but is already paid... and these are all nice people, very mannered, urban and polite :D which is a problem - the Carnival needs maniacs ! I remember as a kid, the loud bunch with a lot of archaic masks, real ram, goat and even massive bovine skulls, covered with colorful patchworks of clothes and pelts, impressive and scary creatures ... but very funny and kind to children, with a fresh joke in every house, usually teasing the host.
But it's ok ... things must change through time ... and this is still a nice party ...
... with many happy faces on display.
I took most of these shots ...
... on the crossroad not far from my house ... there were pop songs from a laptop and people with accordion, and the mix of musics was hard to listen without a bit of wine or beer ... or a drug of your choice.
The carnival car ... a small tractor with a trailer ... was filled with food and drinks ...
... and was great to see people dance and chat around it ...
... dipped in the loud cacophony.
As I said at the beginning of the post ... some of the masks and costumes are always inspired by the current events and news, the global ones seen on TV or small local stories, heard and lived first-hand inside the community.
So this year, you could see a group in yellow fishing raincoats with the Anti Corona Virus Team written on the back ...
... and then ...
... there were these Dubai - people ...
... with the shopping cart filled with dollars.
Although this can be interpreted as some global news commentary ...
... the group is actually ...
... all about a local event.
The high members of the local Tourist board made a " business visit" to Dubai recently ... and those guys and girls are famous for their expensive " business visits" with no effect on local economy ... so here is a little fun on their expenses, and our Dollar - filled future. There is a barrel of oil too ... because :) you know ... Middle East - oil ... you can't have one without the other in the collective imagination.
A small dog appeared on the crossroad at one point ...
... and I started to follow with the camera ...
... his walk among the high human legs.
I liked this prospective ...
... things looked cool from down there ...
... so I continued to shoot ...
... even when the dog disappeared.
Then another, bigger, black dog passed by ... and the death took a good look at him ... I adore this symbolic little scenes
that only the Carnival can bring to my neighborhood.
And here is little beer advert ... drink, drink :D and you'll end up like this. On the following three photographs ...
... you can see a little talk ...

... and ... and I don't know ... some colorful cube - hat character that would surely feel at home in Lewis Caroll's Wonderland.
Here ... sitting on the Carnival car ...
... is the puppet, that will soon be put on trial and then condemned and burned for all bad things that happened from the last year's Carnival till today. This is the ancient ritual part.

Another dog ... a big white one this time ... passed through the colorful confusion ...

... devils ...
... and drunken virus fighters ...
... in the good company of the beer - drinking death ...
... unemployed workers ...
... from the recently liquidated shipyard ...
... and the collapsing industry in general ...
... the happy Dubai people ...
... with the happy shopping cart ...
... filled with money and optimism.
They are still walking ...
... and posing ...
... in various combinations ...
... and I have many more pictures ...
... but ...
... I'm running out of words ...
... so ...
... now ...
