Today's Weed News for June 21st 2018 #NYPD

For today's weed news we go to the great city of New York.

New York Mayor Bill DeBlasio took to the airwaves on Tuesday to announce a new policy that is supposed to limit arrests and trips to the police station over cannabis possession in New York City.

"New Yorkers with no priors will receive a summons instead of an arrest for smoking marijuana publicly...We believe this will result in thousands of fewer arrests. In fact we think at least 10,000 fewer New Yorkers will be arrested under this policy" said DeBlasio.

Although this is a positive change and definitely another small step towards rethinking the failed war on cannabis, it remains only a policy and not actually the law.

The New York Times reports that about 17,500 people are arrested for marijuana in the Big Apple each year. They also report that Black New Yorkers are 8 times more likely to be arrested for cannabis possession then whites despite the fact that usage levels are very similar among both demographics.

DeBlasio's announcement is kind of like guidance to the NYPD. It urges them to write citations and release people who brake cannabis possession laws rather than haul them down to the station. But if the officers don't agree, there is nothing really stopping them from arresting weed smokers.

The mayor has been promising an end to New York City's failed cannabis policy for a while now, but arrests for weed have continued regardless.

A spokesperson for New York State Governor Andrew Cuomo just released a statement stating that no further state laws will be changed in regards to cannabis this year.

That means that DeBlasio's policy is as good as it's going to get in New York for now.

Let's just hope that the NYPD actually takes this to heart and doesn't choose to blatantly ignore it and continue creating policy at their own discretion.
