Perhaps you chose them, or they chose you, or even that some greater power or chance pushed you toward them. They are generally charismatic, intelligent and convincing. Even if it's not clear why, there is a reason to listen to these people and follow their advice, teachings and possibly imperatives. They are leaders on account of the influence they have on other people and may rise to be community leaders, but they may also be quiet simple folk, or even mostly hermetic.
I'd simply add a blurb about it in the description, as you can't have one without the other, something like and their apprentices, students and disciples.
