Chapter 69

Bill knocked on the front door of Michael’s house. After a long wait, Sarah opened it. She nodded at the hit men with cool recognition, stepping back to let them in. Brian, Matt, Aaron, and Ray followed Bill.

“Where are Michael and Natasha?” Brian asked, turning to face Sarah.

She answered as she swung the door closed. “They went out to get ice cream so Marcel could have his guys dispose of the bodies and clean this place up, without them being in the way, or Natasha having to be around all the dead bodies.” Her tone was professional.

“That was a good idea,” Bill said with approval. “Whose idea was that?”

“Marcel’s,” Sarah answered. She started to step away so she could continue her conversation with the crime boss. Ray questioned her before she could turn on her heel.

“So what happened with the police?” They didn’t ask too many questions, did they?”

Sarah’s rotation stopped, and she turned to face him. “Actually, we had to kill them,” she said with feigned remorse.

“Holy shit,” the shock in Brian’s deep voice resonated with his partners.

“What happened?” asked Matt, articulating what each criminal was thinking.

“The cops brought Natasha here,” Sarah responded, barley concealing her impatience. “They stood on the steps while Michael talked to them, and I made sure the door was mostly closed to hide the bodies. But at one point, neither of us were paying enough attention to Natasha, and she pushed the door open and ran inside.”

The assassins surrounding Sarah listened in frozen attention.

Venom stealthily slunk into her tone. She sounded more like a deadly predator with every word. “They started pulling their guns, and then we had no choice. We had to kill them. We didn’t have time for all their bullshit.”

Aaron interjected. “Yeah, obviously killing cops is a terrible idea if you can avoid it,” he said understandingly. “But it sounds like you didn’t have any choice, like you said. What’s a cop gonna do when they see someone hiding a pile of dead bodies, right?”

“Exactly,” said Sarah. Her tone became normal again. “Anyway, guys,” she looked at each criminal. “I’m having a talk with Marcel in Michael’s office. I’m gonna go continue that conversation until Michael and Natasha get back.”

The dangerous men nodded and grunted. She had already turned and was moving back down the hallway.
