NIGERIA AND CORRUPTION
Nigerians are their own problem. I used to think our leaders to be our problem, but I have realized that they are not. Our leaders only thrive on our gullibility and foolishness.
Corruption has so much eaten us up that even though we hate it, yet we love it. We want to fight it, yet we support it. We hate corrupt leaders, yet we support them. Ironic? Yes it is ironic and we are ironic as a people! That explains how much corruption has eaten us.
We are trapped, but we don't even know it. We have lost our conscience, and yet we are not even aware of it; and that's the real tragedy.
Little wonder we will always find a way to fault any attempt to fight corruption.
It's either we are screaming that the fight is selective, or that it is witch-hunting, or that due process has not been followed (like due process is followed when they steal our money). Nigerians will always find a way to protect that which they love so much- corruption.
Often times we sound intelligent in our arguments like we care for our country; or that we are fighting to protect rule of law and all the other things we usually claim we are seeking to protect.
But the truth is that, like people under a curse, we are always intelligent, diligent and creative in finding ways of protecting that which we love so much-corruption.
We love corruption. Even those of us that think we hate it, we unconsciously love it.
People need to understand that they can be logical, intelligent, cerebral, and yet be trapped. Trapped loving what you hate, all in the name of being rational.
Corruption is an existential problem for us as a country; can we just for a minute treat it like one?
