Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Hon. Ahmed Idris Wase has claimed Nigeria is producing more food than the population can actually consume.

According to him, that was why the House of Representative passed a resolution urging President Muhammadu Buhari to mop up the excess grains in the country and save them for rainy days.

This was made known in a statement by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Mohammed Umar on Saturday.

The statement reads in part, “The House has passed a resolution urging the federal government to mop up excess grains in the market so as to store same for rainy days and at the same time encourage more production.

“It goes to show that Nigeria is producing more food than the population can actually consume which is why there is excess. But government will continue to promote local food production. Our covenant with Nigerians is to make their lives better.”

The deputy Speaker reiterated his resolve to advance the improvement of the living standard of Nigerians who always braced obstacles to come out and vote during elections.

Recalling a particular campaign incident in Jos, the Plateau state capital during the presidential campaign where overwhelming crowd of Nigerians trooped out to welcome President Muhammad Buhari, Wase said that the common Nigerians made sacrifices to be there on that day based on their believe in the ability of the president to positively impact their lives.

He promised to do his best under the circumstances, adding that the House leadership would not let Nigerians down, and that “it’s not about party or religion, but the good and progress of Nigeria”.
