why has many African businesses specially that of Nigerians failed in the aspect of longevity, why is it that many African businesses starts and ends with their founder at most successful, it survives the first generation, only few, very few African business can be said to be a "family" business or can stand the test of time, whereby each generation that comes takes over and keep raising the bar high.
So what do other business men in America and western the world saw that we African missed that makes most of our business to not to be trans-generational? I mean come to think of it, Ford started as way back as 1903, General Motors, 1908, * Mercedes-Benz, 1926. Coca-Cola made their first sale in 1886. All these companies have one thing in common, they all are over hundred years old and not only are they still existing, they constantly top Forbes top 100 list, even when their founders are long gone.
As an entrepreneur, I did a little research about this using most local business as case study. So here is what i found out.
Most started solely to make money.
Yes the prayer of every business owner is to brake even, but when that becomes the only goal, to make money and money alone; no passion, no vision, no interest in solving societal problems, the business starts to "shake" once this money is made.
Did you know that Coca-cola started out as a syrup to cure addictions, headaches. Now its a global business because they started out to solve a problem first, then the money came, Apple, Ford, Pampers etc. They all saw a gap in the society and sets out to fill it, and thats one of the reason they are still here even with all the money they have made, they still finds a reason to come to work everyday because they know they have a problem to solve in the society which will give them reward(money). So its not all about the money though its very good, but you have to connect to something higher.
Personalizing their business
There is this Igbo(one of the three main languages in Nigeria) adage which says that a goat which is owned by many dies of hunger. This is the same philosophy that many Africans business men in general and Nigeria in particular have. They believe that if more people owns the business, or knows about it, it will die just like the proverbial goat i mentioned above, so they keep the ideas, vision, skills to themselves thus running an "almighty" man business whereby without his/her "ok", deals may not be made, salaries not paid etc just because he/she is not around.
Our business men and women have not really built in the philosophy; "two good heads is better than one and most of them has not really come to terms with the idea of partnership forgetting that getting many good heads into the system will ensure longevity more than when they are man alone or running it with their family only.
Failure to Innovate.
So many "big" companies we know that made gait strides in the past are gradually going out of the market simply because they failed to adopt to the current trends. Take for instance Kodak very great company that changed the world of camera is gradually going out of market because smaller companies like Snapchat, Instagram etc. Kodak which had over 1000 employees when snapchat came out but didn't make up to a $billion USD, but snapcht with only 15 employees then sold for over a $billion USD. In today's wold, your size doesn't really matter, but you adaptability does.
The motto now is innovate or die.
If only our people will stop thinking small and realize the huge potential here in Africa, they will not only improve but will dominate. Its good to start small but its highly prohibited to think small. Yes Apple started in a garage, but are they still there ? No. Amazon once used a garage as a sales store for their on-line shopping, are they still there? No Walmart started up just as an American store, but are they just in America now? No they are all over the world, well almost.
so why think small when it cost you the same thing thinking big will cost: Nothing.
Poor Successor planning
African in general has mind set that when you plan for things incase you die or other unforeseen circumstances, that you are actually prying for that and it may come, so to avoid pissing off the gods, they stay quit and die unprepared. leaving the fate of the business they have built in the hands culture instead of experience and commitment. I have seen situations a business tycoon died and instead of the most experienced child to take over, it was given to the eldest son who had no interest whatsoever and in matter of few years, the chains of company collapsed.
While human life is finite and ultimately to death and misfortune, a business can "theoretically" live for ever. This should not be left in the hands of chance or emergency.

There are four types of business ownership chambers, the I quadrant(investors), the B-quadrant(business owner), The S-quadrant(self-employed)The E-quadrant(Employee),the each section has the mentality of the owner/owners as the pillar, The I&B section are at the first-class(Top/leading/leverage/delegation/freedom/not-security), the the S & E is the secondary/2nd/3rd class operators, their major concept/concern is security/consumerism, Their business backbone is dependent on them, should they accidentally/eventually get sick ,so do their business, The E- is an employee, too careful and job-SECURITY-concious not FREEDOM, THANKS NICE POST
