A global humanitarian organization originated in France – Action Against Hunger is mainly dedicated to ending malnutrition and world hunger. This organization specifically helps hungry and malnourished children and provides them a feasible solution to combat hunger and access to safe water. In 2014, the organization has worked in 49 separate countries across the world. More than 6,000 employees and volunteers help through this for almost 13.6 million needy people around the world. A group of French writer, scientists and doctors have established the organization. Alfred Kastler – a Nobel Prize winner was the first chairman here.

Initial starting:

The group started with providing assistance in Pakistan for the Afghan refugees. After that, they started working in several other countries such as in Ugandan communities, in Thailand for the Cambodian refugees and many more. To address more humanitarian concerns in Africa, the group has expanded its network through the Middle East, Africa, and Southeast Asia etc during the period of 1980-1990.

The scientific committee of Action Against Hunger established a healing milk formula (F100) which is now used by most of the major humanitarian organizations while treating acute malnutrition. As a consequence, the mortality rate of acutely malnourished children specifically under 5 years has really been reduced to 5% from 25% across the world. After a few years, this therapeutic milk had been repackaged as a ready-to-use food like a power bar. They don’t need any type of refrigeration or preparation before using and easily can be used to treat malnutrition at your home.

At present, this international network has its headquarters in five different countries – The UK, the US, Canada, France and Spain. In these countries, their work mainly focused on four basic areas:

Nutrition

Food security

Water and sanitation

Advocacy

The approaches with different sectors of involvement:

Nutrition and health

Sanitation, water and maintaining hygiene

Livelihoods and food security

Emergency response

Why does it matter?

It is said that almost 800 million people sleep hungry every night and 1 among every three children is suffering from chronic undernutrition. These mainly happen to the middle-income or low-income countries. Near about half of the total child deaths happen due to undernutrition or malnutrition across the world. Although it is:

Predictable: We all know exactly when to expect acute malnutrition or undernutrition. Also, we know where to expect the scenario.

Preventable: We all know how to help a malnourished child to recover and how to help a child    to stay healthy.

Treatable: A perfect nutrition program and therapeutic foods easily can help children to stay healthy. Millions of children can be saved either.

Action Against Hunger is a hunger-fighting organization who knows how to offer lifesaving treatments to malnourished and under nourished children
