virtual band Gorillaz’s  made public an explosion of new content to celebrate their first album's 20th anniversary. The band shot to international fame with their self-titled album, which sold over 7 million units worldwide and included a series of hit singles.

Regrettably, the news has not gone down well. In addition to new reissues, merchandise, and other anniversary festivities, the band has announced that they will expand into the contentious territories of NFTs.

On Twitter, Gorillaz fans were able to point out the absurdity of the band hopping on the non-fungible token bandwagon. Although it may be impossible to determine exactly how harmful NFTs are in terms of carbon emissions, the picture does not seem to be promising. As the band has been vocal about environmental concerns in the past, most notably on their 2010 album Plastic Beach.

Following the development of a record themed around the dangers of over consumption and waste, It is backward for the band to then put their name behind a procedure that has been identified as being extremely detrimental to the atmosphere due to NFTs' high energy requirements.

NFTs are currently the biggest trend in the music industry. Artists like Grimes, Diplo, and now The Weeknd have tried to capitalize on the cryptocurrency art industry by selling music and digital artwork as an NFT.
