Diablada is the debut feature byChilean director Álvaro Muñoz Rodríguez , with a script by Omar Saavedra Santis , based on the 14 rapes and murders of women that shook Chile between 1998 and 2001. The investigation carried out by the production company Yestay lasted two years, between 2015 and 2016, which involved various interviews with the victims' families, to shape the script of this Chilean film that not only seeks to portray the murders, but also the economic discrimination and gender violence prevailing in Latin America.

The filming lasted six weeks and was carried out in the Atacameña province of Huasco, just kilometers from Alto Hospicio . Local people were integrated into it, which gave credibility to the story. The fictional story takes place in a town called Molle Viejo, and focuses on a father and his only daughter, who one day does not return home, and this father, foreseeing the worst, begins the search together with the other relatives after the clues of the missing young women, who had something in common, were poor women who lived in that desolate town. A police officer named Rosaura empathizes with the cause and decides to collaborate with the task.

In 1998, a bloody murderer took advantage of the negligence of the police and institutions to rape, murder and make young women disappear, most of them teenagers. In a place like Alto Hospicio, where marginality, poverty and crime reign, it is not strange for the police and the authorities to think that these adolescents had gone on their own to Peru or Bolivia to practice prostitution to face the scarcity. . But the relatives rejected this theory and did not give up in the search for their loved ones.

But once it was discovered that the young women were kidnapped, raped and murdered by Julio Perez Silva 'The psychopath of Alto Hospicio', the portrait of the adolescents changed drastically and from prostitutes they became innocent victims of an abominable act. The serial killer was eventually sentenced to life imprisonment for the rape and murder of fourteen women.

Fernando Trueba vindicates goodness in ' The forgetfulness that we will be' , a film with Javier Cámara that adapts Héctor Abad Faciolince's novel about a doctor killed in the middle of the Colombian conflict. Another Colombian, Rodrigo García, directs ' 4 dias ', an intimate drama that tells the story of a mother and a daughter addicted to heroin, with Glenn Close and Mila Kunis. Also premieres' Quo Vadis Aida? ', a Bosnian film nominated for an international film Oscar, a different look at the Srebrenica massacre. German cinema proposes a romantic comedy, ' Endless Wedding ', a mixture of 'My best friend's wedding' and 'Palm Springs'. In classic cinema, this episode we review the career of one of the great myths of cinema,Gary Cooper and the 125th anniversary of the arrival of cinema in Spain. On television, we are going to analyze one of the series that has best denounced violence against women: ' The Handmaid's Tale ', which returns with its fourth season.

The oblivion that we will be (Fernando Trueba)

The Colombian writer Héctor Abad Faciolince published in 2006 ' The forgetfulness that we will be ', a family chronicle, a book in homage to his father. Dr. Héctor Abad was a doctor, teacher, activist, a human rights fighter who was assassinated by the paramilitaries in the 80s. This story, this fictionalized biography, has accompanied Fernando Trueba for many years, it is the book that has most gifted and his adaptation, he says, in the end he has looked for him.

The film puts images of this emotional love story, that of a father and son in a large middle-class family in Medellín in the 70s. From the first moment, both Trueba and the author were clear that Javier Cámara had to be the protagonist. So much so that they organized a 'trap' to convince him. He was the perfect actor for this Latin American Atticus Finch, a common hero with a powerful humanistic vision like that of 'To Kill a Mockingbird'.

With a Colombian accent and a striking physical resemblance, Cámara plays Dr. Héctor Abad, a popular activist doctor who fought in the university and on the streets for social equality. Much of his career was dedicated to researching preventive medicine, never wanted operating rooms, to convince the authorities that the way was to provide resources and health to the most disadvantaged areas of the city. His pedagogical work, at home and in the classrooms, made him a symbol for the younger doctors whom he took to visit poor neighborhoods and see malnourished children.

A vindication of goodness, of public service, which sounds louder today, in times of pandemic, with the defense of universal health that leaves no one behind. Entirely Colombian production, in fact it won the Goya for best Ibero-American film, the director makes a reliable adaptation, signed by his brother, David Trueba, with a visual proposal that fills the happy years of that family with color and light and opts for white and black to face the memory of the loss, to the last days of Dr. Abad, when he was persecuted for his ideas and assassinated.

Héctor Abad Gómez carried his commitment to the end. His defense was for freedom, social justice and the abuses that the paramilitaries perpetrated in recent years with the collusion of the Colombian State. Beyond health and politics, 'The forgetfulness that we will be' is a beautiful, intimate and universal story of a family that grew up and was educated in love, that understood the contagious power of affection in the face of hatred and pain . A film that, in times of cynicism and tension, warms the soul.

4 days (Rodrigo García)

The opioid crisis in the United States is one of the great pandemics that the country has suffered for years. Addictions in this neo-capitalist society, which is based on effort, success and perfection above all things, have caused millions of people to end up sick, without protection and help. This is the case of Amanda, a young woman from Detroit who has been away from drugs for years and who managed to get out of it, in part with the help of her mother. The story of both is collected by Rodrigo García, a Colombian film director, who premieres 4 days, a film with Mila Kunis and Glenn Close. A family drama about guilt and mistrust that explores how to get out of addiction in a middle-class family.

Rodrigo García made his film debut with Things that I would say just by looking at her . From there he continued observing and entering the female universe. Films like Nine Lives, Ten tiny Love or Mothers and Daughters followed . Work that he combined with the filming and writing of television series, In therapy, The Sopranos, Two meters underground or Parents and children . Son of Gabriel García Márquez is now preparing a new series and supervising what will be the first adaptation of One Hundred Years of Solitude , the great Latin American novel that will become a series for Netflix.

'Quo Vadis, Aida?' (Jasmila Zbanic)

One of the Oscar nominees hits theaters, Quo Vadis Aida? , a film by the Bosnian director Jasmila Zbanic, who tells, through a local translator, how the Srebrenica tragedy occurred in July 1995. A story that goes from the intimate to the political and returns to the Balkan war but with a different look, close to survival and far from sensationalism.

Come and see (Elen Klimov)

We continue with wars, in this time of reruns and returns to the big screen, from the hand of Filmin 'Massacre: Come and see', a Russian film from the year 85, directed by Elem Klimov, reaches theaters. An anti-war allegation that was commissioned to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the Allied victory in World War II. It recounts, through the eyes of a child progressively hardened by suffering, the systematic slaughter of the inhabitants of Belarusian villages, more than 600, during the war.

Endless Wedding (Maggie Peren)

Time loops had not appeared in fiction for a long time, but this 2021 comes with them under his arm. If at the end of January we were talking about 'Palm Springs', the comedy starring Andy Samberg and Cristin Milioti, now a new proposal comes directly from Germany: 'Endless Wedding' , by filmmaker Maggie Peren, which they define as a mixture exact between the now mythical 'Trapped in time' and 'My best friend's wedding' .

In this film starring Alicia Von Rittberg we meet Zazie, a young woman who had always dreamed of love until her parents began to argue about anything. And it was precisely because of that broken illusion that he lost Philipp, his best friend: mistaking love for friendship is always dangerous . But everything will take a huge turn when Zazie discovers in her mailbox an invitation to the wedding of that unconditional friend whom she lost years ago. Yes, as in 'Palm Springs', the time loop begins with a wedding that the young protagonist will be forced to repeat over and over again.until you reorganize your priorities and do the right thing once and for all. In reality, it would be much easier for all of us to get life right if we had a thousand and one opportunities to do so.

Along the way, Zazie will not only have the opportunity to regain contact with her childhood best friend, but she will also be able to overcome various traumas that have haunted her from her earliest years of life. And it is that, in the middle of all this romantic comedy anchored in the same day of the calendar, the German filmmaker reflects on today's relationships and the insecurities that haunt each of us, many of them motivated by family stories.

Perhaps its greatest strength is the construction of its characters . Together with Zazie we meet Anton and Patrick. The first is the typical good-natured who, in fact, is unable to answer "no"; while the second is the typical womanizer. Something cliché, but within those stereotypes so marked, Peren knows how to take advantage of them. For example, causing Anton to suffer from narcolepsy and, therefore, fall asleep in the most unexpected places and times. In fact, although the plot seems to revolve around Zazie's attempt to sabotage the wedding between Philipp and Franziska, the story that ends up most interesting is the one that takes place in that shared flat.

Although it offers several plot twists that give it a certain original touch compared to the rest of the comedies about weddings, the truth is that it does not surprise too much either. Nor can it be said that this was its claim (if it was, it does not succeed), but it must be admitted that it is a film that is made quickly, since its duration slightly exceeds an hour and a half of footage. You could say that although it won't get the biggest laugh, it promises a pretty entertaining viewing experience.

Those who wish my death (Taylor Sheridan)

Angelina Jolie stars in this thriller directed by Tyler Sheridan, screenwriter of Comanchería or Sicario . It is a literary adaptation, which tells of the persecution of a witness to a murder by two twin murderers through the wilds of Montana.

Isabella (Matías Piñeiro)

From D'A Festival , Isabella , a film by the Argentine Matías Piñeiro, jumps to the cinemas , which proposes a reflection on life, cinema, success, through an actress who does not get roles and her relationship with her brother and another partner who he is luckier than her.

Monster (Anthony Mandle)

On platforms, there are no big news this week, Netflix launches as an unpublished premiere a 2018 film, a drama produced, among others, by singer John Legend, and full of now-known actors, such as John David Washington, Kelvin Harrison Jr., Jharrel Jerome or Jennifer Hudson ... The trial of an African-American boy accused of participating in a murder, very much in the vein of the series This is how they see us. Directed by Anthony Mandler, known for the music videos of Rihanna and Jay Z.
