Happy Independence Day...India!

15th August is a big day in India. On this date in 1947 India bacame an independent nation. It was a long struggle since the first Sepoy mutiny in the year 1857. With the famous "Tryst with destiny" speech by Nehru on the midnight of 14th August 1947 powers were transferred to India from the British empire after almost 200 years.

As part of the celebrations almost all the major government buildings are lit up with fabulous colourful string lightings. Its a national holiday across the country. Almost all the markets and shops remain closed for the day. People wait anxiously to hear the Independence Day speech by the current prime minister from the ramparts of Red Fort in Delhi on this day. An address to the nation is delivered by the President on the eve of Independence Day.

Children are a merry lot on this day. Kite flying is the major activity across northern India. Almost all the roof tops are occupied with kite flyers and onlookers. Its a magnificent sight as the whole sky is full of kites of different sizes, shapes and colours. And there is an undeclared kite flying or fighting competition going on where in the person whose kite stays in the sky for the maximum time is the king.

But we should not forget to salute and pay homage to all those who had made it possible for all of us to breathe in an independent India. It had been their efforts and sacrifice which has given us this freedom. Our freedom fighters endured countless sufferings to give Indians their freedom. It's a day to remember and honor them from the deepest core of our heart.
