Kerala Floods: A man made disaster
On 10 August 2018, all five shutters of the Cheruthani dam were raised for the first time in history with the water level in dam exceeding 2400 ft mark. The water kept rising in Asia's biggest arch dam after opening first sluice gate, which lead to the opening all five gates within a matter of 26 hour's resulting in a wide spread flooding along the state's longest river_Pariyar _.We will analyze factors that causes floods in Kerala.
Causes for Kerala floods
The last rival to a flood of this scale in Kerala was in 1924. Where monsoon pelted the state with 3'368 mm of rain. At the time , over 1000 People are said to have lost there lives. The 2,086 mm of rainfall is nowhere near as Bad. Then what are the reasons that caused flooding.
There used to be lots of trees , last 3 decades Rapid Urbanisaiton.
Heavy Rainfall since the June (42.17% excess in state,83.59% in Idukki )
High People Density compared to all India density. Census 2011 puts Kerala's Population density at 859 per square K/m which is more than twice the all India 382.
Lack of paddy farming is also the another cause. 30 year back, Kerala had 8 lack Hectare of paddy land. At present, We roughly have 1.5 Lack of paddy field left with us.
