Without legs on Mount Everest
40 years ago, Chinese mountaineer Xia Boyu set a unique record - he became the first climber to reach Mount Everest from the Nepalese direction. The very feat would not be so special if the alpinist 40 years ago did not lose both legs on this mountain.

More than 40 years ago, the Chinese Xia Boyu tried to climb to the highest mountain of the world. He was with his friend when a severe snow storm caught them just below the summit, so they were forced to spend three nights in the so-called "zone of death" 8000 meters above sea level. Boyu gave up his sleeping bag to another alpinist who was sick.

Due to terrible frostbites, he had to amputate both feet, and in 1996 he cut his legs above his knees due to lymphoma. Despite the injuries, he never lost hope of ever going to the roof of the world. "Climbing the Everest has always been my dream," the BBC reported in April to Boyu. "I have to realize them; it is the test of my faith."
