Exploring Ashura Kanji Traditions in Aceh
BANDA ACEH - Ashura Day is the 10th day of the month of Muharram. This year, Ashura day falls on Thursday, September 20 2018. In Acehnese society, there are many ways to celebrate one of them, namely to take Ashura Day. This obstacle is carried out by providing starch porridge for residents who carry out fasting on that day.
The tradition of cooking Ashura kanji has been passed down through the generations. In some areas in Aceh, this tradition is still preserved. However, there are also some who have started to forget.
In addition to residents who carry out fasting, indulgence in Ashura starch can also be felt by other residents who do not fast. For example, kenduri is carried out in a village or village, so all the locals can feel it.
Some residents gathered in an open field, bringing ingredients to make porridge, collected and cooked together. Then distributed to children. Some are left to those who fast.
Quoted from various sources, the ingredients for making Ashura starch consist of rice, cassava, sweet potatoes, corn, bananas, peanuts, green beans, ripe jackfruit, red beans, fragrant pandan leaves, sugar, salt, and coconut milk.
Sweet potatoes, sweet potatoes and bananas are cut into cubes or slightly larger than that, then mixed with all the ingredients in a large pan. Sweet and thick doses can be adjusted to taste. If you want more thick, you can add a little beureune (dry sago).
In Bireuen, this tradition is still preserved in dayahs. As seen on Daya Muslimat Princess, Samalanga, Thursday (09/20/2018). Some mothers were assisted by santri with the spirit of cooking Ashura kanji. This tradition is held every year.
Another thing is also seen in Pidie. Not only in Islamic boarding schools and Islamic boarding schools, but Ashura is also carried out by ordinary people. Local residents shoulder to shoulder cooking the feast.
