DTube - Entire Country's Internet Goes Down - What This Could Mean For Us

in #news7 years ago

One of our most recent video reports!
See the original article below:

Josh Sigurdson talks with author and economic analyst John Sneisen about the recent reports of the entire country of Mauritania's internet going offline following a submarine cable mysteriously breaking.
While no one knows how it happened, it can shine a light on a massive problem within countries like the United States where the electric grid is more than 50 years outdated and can cause a huge problem. Of course the internet can go down anywhere and if the government has control of the strands of wire on the sea floor connecting countries, it can cause some massive issues.
The electric grid in the US is incredibly terrible. We can thank government monopolization of the sector and therefor the utter lack of incentive for innovation and competition.
On the free market, this problem could be a minor one. With alternative marvels across the board on the market we wouldn't all be stuck on one inefficient outdated government monopolized grid which is actually quite dangerous too in the event of a major solar flare.

We will continue to cover this issue. Stay tuned for more from WAM!

Hello @joshsigurdsion. In the unfortunate circumstance that the internet does go down, many infrastructures dependent on the internet to operate effectively will come crashing down resulting in the economy of any nation to come to a complete standstill. The power sector needs to be privatized to upgrade and meet the mounting energy demands of the population.

agree i know there are many risk on internet money on many countries specially in asians ..but i dont think that it has any impect on steemers ..

I don't completely agree. I don't think an incident in Mauritania warrants us to be on edge. Mauritania is an extremely poor and corrupt Country so there may be underlying issues that caused the collapse. I agree that our electricity infrastructure is outdated though and something needs to be done

Hopefully Elon Musk launches his satellite internet project soon :)

It's means censorship!

As far as control goes, this might be the last line of defense in an unruly populous, just cut the comms. We rely heavily on the internet and losing it would be disastrous, it would cause chaos on some levels, which would mean people are distracted and uninformed from any current happenings

IT could also make escape from that country easier, also no tracking.

This is why I have a solar panel and inverter.

Mesh networks is the way to go. There are other wavelengths of radio that aren't as dangerous as the MM tech of 5G. It is going to be inevitable that wireless is adopted in time, as the investment in wires is far too steep.

It's also centralizing to have a wired infrastructure, which is contrary to our best interests.

Thanks!

Just repairing or upgrading our infrastructure would create millions of jobs . There is a new alternative and its carbon based fiber optics which will be tougher and more reliable then current fiber optics and promises to be faster .
