JERUSALEM, June 14, 2025 - Tensions in the Middle East have reached a boiling point as Israel announced plans to strike more strategic targets in Tehran. The announcement came after a series of precision airstrikes overnight devastated Iran's key air defense system. The Israeli Defense Force (IDF) confirmed that the operation, called "Operation Rising Lion," destroyed dozens of Iranian radar installations and surface-to-air missile launchers, severely weakening Iran's ability to launch a counter-attack.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu called the attacks a major blow to Iran's nuclear ambitions and ballistic missile capabilities. He warned that more targets in Tehran are on their radar targets. "We will not allow Iran to pose an existential threat to us," Netanyahu said in a televised address.

Over 200 Israeli warplanes struck more than 100 targets in Iran in an overnight attack, including the Natanz nuclear facility, military bases and residences of nuclear scientists and commanders. Iranian state media reported that at least 78 people were killed, including two deputy commanders of the armed forces and six nuclear scientists, while more than 300 people, mostly civilians, were wounded. A residential complex belonging to Iran's Defense Ministry northeast of Tehran was reduced to rubble, killing 60 people, including 20 children.

Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei called the attacks a "declaration of war" and vowed a "bitter and painful" retaliation. In response, Tehran fired a barrage of ballistic missiles and more than 100 drones at Tel Aviv and Jerusalem, killing three people and wounding dozens. Air raid sirens sounded in Israel. The IDF claimed it intercepted most of the missiles, although explosions were heard in both cities.

Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz warned Khamenei: "If Tehran continues to fire missiles at our citizens, Tehran will burn." The IDF also revealed that Mossad agents smuggled explosive drones and precision weapons into Iran to carry out internal attacks on missile launchers and air defense systems.

The international community is tense, as Iran has threatened to target bases of the US, UK and France if they intervene. The US denied its involvement, but confirmed that its air defense systems helped Israel intercept Iranian missiles. Oil prices jumped amid fears of possible supply disruptions in the Middle East.

With Israel's long-running operation and Iran's threat of retaliation, the region is heading towards a major war. Stay tuned for more updates on this high-stakes conflict.
