New Books Tuesday: May 29

in #news7 years ago

Many people know that Wednesday is New Comics day. Somewhat less known is the fact that Tuesday, in the US, is New Books day.

Weekly disclaimer: This weekly post highlights some of the books being published on any given week, usually in the science fiction and fantasy genres, both YA and books for adults. I am VERY likely to miss cool new books, so please feel free to tell me about them in the comments. Sometimes these will be books I've read a pre-publishing copy of, but most of the time, they will not. These are books I find notable, but I certainly don't read fast enough in English to be able to read all the cool books that come out every week.

But first, sad news

Gardner Dozois passed away earlier this week. I decided not to write a separate post about him, instead putting it here, where people who like science fiction and fantasy are likely to see it. Whether you know his name or not, if you like sff books and stories, Gardner Dozois has had an impact on your life. Alongside Ellen Datlow, Gardner Dozois was one of the most influential editors in the last thirty or forty years of science fiction. As the editor of Asimov's Science Fiction Magazine for many years, and the editor of countless anthologies including the longest running Year's Best antho in sff, he has had a major part in shaping the genre, discovering and highlighting new authors. And he also invented the word "cyberpunk." RIP, Gardner. You were awesome.

Okay, on to the books.

Vicious) by V.E. Schwab

This is not, in fact, a new novel. It's a reissue in honor of the sequel coming later this year. Because when this book was originally released, Victoria Schwab was a midlist author, and now she's a superstar. This is an excellent book, the story of two men with powers and a terrible history. I've been waiting for the sequel for years, and am very hype for it. The new edition also contains a short story set in the same universe and a teaser for the recently completed sequel.

The Freeze-Frame Revolution) by Peter Watts

Acclaimed sf writer Watts, most famous for Blindsight brings this new short novel that sounds fascinating, about a woman trying to start a revolution in a spaceship under some of the most impossible conditions ever.

Legendary (Caraval #2) by Stephanie Garber

This is one of those entries that are really public service announcements. The sequel to YA bestseller Caraval is out. If you've been waiting for it, go get it.

LIFEL1K3 by Jay Kristoff

Celebrated YA author Kristoff is starting a new series of with a young woman in a desperate state who discovers she has a power and sets off on a journey. There's androids and an evil brotherhood, and it all sounds quite fun!

Cross Fire (Exo #2) by Fonda Lee

Fonda Lee's star continues to rise in sff for both adults and teens. This is the second book in her Norton award nominated Exo series. Personally, I'm waiting for the sequel to her debut for adults, the excellent Jade City. But they may do in a pinch!

What are you looking forward to reading?
