dTube: How would Steemit increase voter turnout WITHOUT making voting mandatory?

in #news7 years ago

Interesting question from a viewer...what do you think? I had a few ideas but am open to hearing more.

Well, there are many things we could do additionally to ranked choice voting:

  • automating the voter-registration could help especially the USA. We in Germany already have an automatic voter-registration. Everyone who is eligible (at minimum 18 years old and a german citizen) to vote in an election can automatically vote in it. It's a system that seemingly doesn't exist in the USA.

  • introducing a true protest-option in elections everyone who isn't happy with any of the candidates could chose like an "None of the above, draw by lot between all non-candidates"-option.

  • making voting securely possible from anywhere the voters are instead of just reducing it to a few voting-locations. There is a project named Follow-My-Vote ( https://followmyvote.com/ ) going into this direction. Unfortunately I'm not sure if they are still active or not.

  • expanding the duration of elections to f.e. a week instead of just one day. This would ensure that more people would have time to vote and could f.e. also negate the problem of a low voter-turnout because of bad weather in a system that still works over specific voting-locations.

Plus one for protest vote. Goes well with mandatory voting.

@davidpakman do you know if there are actually any groups trying to push for instant runoff voting in local or state races? Are there petition I can sign, or stuff I can do?

Well Maine put in instant runoff voting for local elections, I believe.

I recently did a video about the mandatory voting in Australia and comparison with other countries:

A lot of people might not vote because they are content and don't really see it impacting their daily lives. Voting is not popular like sports are because politics for a lot of people is just plain boring. Being a politician doesn't have the glamour of being a celebrity. some people might also be discontent by politicians being a lot of talk with a lot of inaction or opposite actions of what they said they would do.
Maybe try giving people financial incentives to vote. People love the prospect of free stuff. enter everyone who votes into a lottery and draw prizes or just give them lottery tickets. I personally don't like to gamble but a lot of the people who don't vote might and the possibility of winning something just might move them to the polls. Maybe some sort of tax break but that seems like it would be complicating things.

make voting day a holiday, automatic registration, maybe incorporate some blockchain tech in to voting?

Make voting day in November a federal holiday. Maybe have it replace Columbus Day so the number of federal holidays doesn't change. I think that would be a simple change which would increase turnout greatly.

That Republicans won't support this as a pro-American cause to MAGA tells us everything we need to know about how people actually voting would affect their future.

Maybe if people felt voting actually made a difference they would vote more. Maybe if gerrymandering didn't negate their votes. Maybe if the electoral college didn't negate their votes. Maybe if Congress actual passed legislation and didn't act like it is a winner take all government...

It's really good the way you are giving a good news to the world,,,,
