Saudi trials of foreigners: Death penalty for women, 100 lashes of partner
Saudi Arabia's Riyadh has ordered the execution of a Sri Lankan domestic worker by stoning the death penalty for 'marital extramarital sex'. However, for the same crime, his male partner has been given 100 punishment sentences.
Reuters reported that 45-year-old married women acknowledge the extramarital affair in court. Then a Saudi court in August issued the verdict.
The Sri Lankan government has already been requested by the Saudi authorities to forgive him.
An official from Sri Lanka's Foreign Employment Bureau said that since 2013, the woman was working as a domestic worker in Saudi Arabia. Her partner is also an immigrant worker in Sri Lanka.
He is unmarried - according to the Reuters report, he has been ordered to kill less than 100 lashes.
Opposing the Sri Lankan Foreign Employment Bureau's bureau, Deshapriya told Reuters, "Besides the appeals against the verdict, the Bureau has appointed a lawyer for the woman. Alongside, the Foreign Ministry is discussing the issue at diplomatic level. "
Reuters reports that there was no response from the Saudi embassy officials in Colombo about whether the woman would be forgiven or not.
'Sharia' or Islamic law-abiding country, 'executions' and 'drug trafficking' in Saudi Arabia will be sentenced to death. Human rights organizations have always voiced their concerns about the trial and judicial system of the country.
In Sri Lanka, a domestic helper was slaughtered in 2013 for killing a Saudi child. Colombo appealed that time also
There are millions of Sri Lankan men and women who are working in Saudi Arabia's housekeeping or driving.
According to the country's central bank, in 2014, two lakh 79 thousand 952 people from Saudi Arabia went to different countries in the Middle East with Saudi Arabia. These expatriates sent more than $ 700 million in remittances last year, which is about 9 percent of GDP.
According to human rights organization Amnesty International, the execution of more than 150 people in Saudi Arabia, which is headed by the chairman of the United Nations Human Rights Council panel, has been executed this year, the highest in the last 20 years.
Amnesty says, because the Arabic does not tell and there is not enough scope for translation in the court, foreigners, especially temporary workers from poor countries, are at risk of depriving them of justice.
Of course, Riyad claims that they give all the accused equal opportunities.
