DEFINITION OF BACKBONE NETWORK
Backbone is a channel or high-speed connection that becomes the main path in a network. Network backbone is a network that connects multiple networks with low speed through the gate way

By using a backbone network, the problem of interconnection speeds between local networks can be resolved. Actually it could be if we only use UTP network cable to combine atar local network, but it will be felt once slow. Because UTP cable can only be passed with data transfer rate up to 100 Mbps, backbone network can load up to 10 Gbps. Tools needed to build a backbone network eg bridges or switches that have speeds between 1-10 Gbps.selain that we can use a converter that converts the speed of 100 Mbps to 1 Gbps.
Reasons for backbone network usage:
• Increased interconnection requirements between existing local networks
• Increased data transfer rates especially for graphics, video and audio data, as FDDI data transfer rates can reach 100 Mbps
• The concept of installation and management of the backbone network is simpler, but the range can be wider and more remote
• The backbone network can improve the capability and overcome the transfer bottleneck

Benefits that can be obtained from the interconnection system with this backbone network are:

Backbone network has data transfer speeds reaching 100 Mbps so as to reduce the occurrence of bottleneck events.
• Backbone network will usually use dual ring technique so it has a very high fault tolerance.
• The backbone network can support data traffic, voice and images.
• The network coverage can reach 100 km.
But the interconnection system using this backbone network also has some drawbacks, among others:
• The installation process requires specialized experts.
• Installation and maintenance costs are still relatively expensive.

In principle Telecommunication Infrastructure can be divided into 3 main parts namely:

1. International back bone, the network that connects domestic traffic to the international network, the main means used are submarine and international optical cable and regional satellite.

2. Domestic Backbone, is a means of infrastructure that connects cities throughout Indonsia. For metropolitan city connections in the western part of Indonesia are generally connected with optical cable, while terrestrial satellites and radios are connected to all parts of Indonesia, details of each individual bakbone will be described on the next slide.

3. Access Network, is a network connected directly to the customer. This network requires a huge investment with a variety of technological variations. Broadly divided into two, yautu using wired and wireless media. Generally the number of subscribers from each operator represents the amount of access available.
