Spotted: Gossip Girl Fails to Impress—Not so Classy Afterall
What do you call it when you are hooked to something in inexplicable ways, but when you try to give a reason to the addiction, a thick layer of mental fog engulfs you?
That's how I felt when I binge-watched the popular teen drama, Gossip Girl. I might have related to it in a better way if I had watched it as a teen. The complexity, vulnerability, absurd emotions and decisions of that rebellious period of life can be better understood by the people who are presently in that phase.
I didn't realize the irrationalness in my personality when I was the one wearing Converse to everything, religiously following trends, and trying hard to fit in with the coolest group, even if that meant compromising my own personality. No, I wasn't Jenny Humphrey of my time. I could relate to Dan though in a way—trying to get recognized through academic achievements. Thankfully, my school wasn't Constance, where only the filthy rich survived, and unlike Dan, I didn't have to be mean to find my ground. I simply had to ace in academics.
I could write pages on why I couldn't relate to the show, but even if I did, still there were so many things that didn't sit well with me.
Four of the main characters in the show have been best friends since kindergarten. Yet, they betray each other on extreme levels whenever and whenever they see fit. It's hard to judge who's the good one; in one situation, if a friend acts like the meanest jerk, then in another, he/she becomes the most selfless. They are so unpredictable, you can never rely on any of them. They humiliate you, even ruin your life but what sickens me is that they always forgive each other. Forgiving is good, but some damages can't be undone, especially when done repeatedly. Yeah, I'm talking about the ridiculous friendship of Blair Waldorf and Serena van der Woodsen. It's funny how they ruin each other's important days repeatedly just to prove a point and start over when there's no drama anymore. Perhaps it's an elite thing which a mediocre like me can't wrap my brain around.
Besides toxic friendships, another thing which sickens me is that this group of so-called best friends and almost all other characters can't keep their pants on. Almost everyone has slept with everyone at some point except Chuck and Serena. I almost laughed when this fact was explicitly mentioned in the last episodes as if it was an achievement. C'mon, have some decency and leave the exes of your best friends; if not them, then at least leave their current love interests alone.
There is not a single character in the show who's not a cheater or a liar. So much so, we have seasoned blackmailers like Blair who manipulate every damn situation and person. I abhorred her character from the start, but it became less appalling when others stole her light by being equally manipulative later on in the show. Rufus is decent of all, in my opinion, but his character lacked depth when he became the "trophy husband".
There's no moral compass for over-privileged students who spend more time scheming and partying than in studies because why would they when they could easily blackmail their way into any of the Ivies, even if they had potential which was channelled towards all the wrong things.
Let's talk about love interests...
Lily and Rufus—doomed from the beginning. I'm amazed they survived plenty of time together as a couple when both of them liked to live life according to their own hardcore rules and beliefs.
Serena and Dan—one word, "sick". They were all cute in the beginning but the moment they found out about sharing a half-sibling, they were not interesting anymore. Plus, Dan was right about Serena being shallow in his exposé. Her character was charming, but later, she kind of fulfilled the blond stereotype of the "dumb blonde" by never doing the right thing and having absurd reactions in critical situations. Dan wasn't the best but he deserved someone better than Serena or someone more like him, Vanessa perhaps.
Nate Archibald—the golden boy was another shallow character, not entirely honest but a better friend than most. He should have ended up with Serena making a golden couple—gorgeous but shallow. His love interests were mostly absurd and never serious enough. He would ignore all the red flags but then get offended like a child over a simple thing and would break up in a heartbeat.
Chuck and Blair— a swoon-worthy love affair which got boring when dragged. It was super annoying seeing their drama; Chuck is ready, but Blair isn't. Blair is ready, Chuck isn't. Chuck is ready, Blair isn't. Blair is ready, Chuck isn't. What the hell, it's now or never. I don't understand how external affairs can decide if two people can be together or not when nothing affect their relationship directly. It's better to fight your demons together.
I don't know why I was hooked, maybe because of the few surprising elements like Gossip Girl's identity, Chuck's family secrets and I lowkey looked forward to the Lily's elegant fashion sense.
XOXO,
Disappointed Viewer.
It's television! Only television! No need to take it too seriously...
I'm beyond the age where a tv show could affect me. I just finished watching, hence the strong opinion. I will probably forget what I watched in a few days. Thanks to poor memory. 😆
That being said, television does influence a lot of people and plays a role in shaping opinions subconsciously. Especially among tender teens.
Absolutely - and that used to be scary in the past. Nowadays it's many times worse thanks to nasty trash TV and Instagram & Co...
While I never watched this show I can relate to how it doesn't appeal to you. While a lot of my friend were watching 90210 and Melrose Place back in the days when those shows were wildly popular, I had a tough time getting into them. I actually couldn't get into them but was forced to watch by a GF at that time in my life . For the most part I find these teenage / tween dramas to be insufferable and only can stand about an episode of two before I have to move onto something else to get that taste out of my mouth. haha
I haven't watched Melrose Place and 90210, and unlike you, I don't know why I'm still drawn to teen shows, but there's hardly any worth recommending or rewatching except Gilmore Girls.
Shows like Gossip Girl, Elite and those you mentioned are mainly about extremely rich people with superficial lives. While extravagant lifestyles draw in a good amount of viewers helping them escape the problems of real life. But all I see is that money makes people shallow; relationships or any stuff which is important to a normal person is taken for granted. How about portraying rich people as humble and decent for a change? But no. We see repeated tropes and betrayals at every turn throughout all the seasons which make them boring and annoying after a point.
I am finally watching Breaking Bad to change the aftertaste. I'm too late to it but I'm determined to tick it off from my watchlist this time.
So Gilmore Girls is worth seeing? I've never seen a single episode but am familiar with its popularity. I'm ok with romance rom-coms and basically anything if it is done well or creatively.
I don't know your taste but in my opinion it's a great show. I'm itching to watch it third time. Although I hate the main protagonist but I can make a long list of things I love about the show. It is relatable, decent and practical.
that's good enough for me. I kind of need a series that is easily consumable as most of the ones I am watching now are quite hardcore and difficult to follow. I would like to mix something in there that is simply easy and fun. Perhaps Gilmore Girls is exactly what I am looking for.
It was like one of those Harlequin books. I haven’t seen the series, but the whole drama of its characters, depicted in this post, makes it exciting to read anyway—even if you don’t know who Dan, Chuck, or Serena are! :D
Haha you mean I might have written a better review than the show itself?
Hey @event-horizon! 😃
I just launched a little something I’ve been building — it’s a lottery app on Steemit that’s fun, fair, and runs daily! 🎉
👉 App Link: Win with Steemit
I’ve sent you 1 STEEM as a gift so you can try it out! Let's see if luck is on your side today 🥂
That sounds exciting. I can see your effort. But I will have to pass playing a lottery game due to personal reasons. Hope you'll understand and don't take it personally.
Oh.. I got it! No probs at all... 💕
However, this is not typical lottery. I think you’ll be pretty surprised when you find out the answer to my question in Gorilla’s quiz. Give it a go Question 07
Off to the quiz... 😀
for someone like you, who was intelligent in school days, if this movie was predictable, you won’t have completed it.
Well, I’m yet to see this movie but from your review alone, it looks interesting to me even though u feel a bit disappointed in it.😊
Since you’re drawn to teen movies, you could watch “mean girls”, you will enjoy it
I wrote a bad review and this show is going to get another viewer. I need to write better. 😅
I will try to watch it but the title sounds like Gossip Girl and I'm not ready to watch something similar so soon. 😆
