Why Do Leaves Change Colour Early? Have You Noticed This Yet?
Have you noticed whilst out walking or going about your daily life that the some trees have already changed to their autumn colours?
I noticed this whilst out walking over the weekend and couldn’t stop wondering why this was so?
It turns out to be simply that the tree has been stressed in the recent past, either from drought, too much water from rain or plagued by insects.
By shredding its leaves early the tree reduces its nutrient and energy output, therefore helping to heal itself for the oncoming winter months.
If plagued by insects the result of changing the colour of the leaves informs the insects that there is a reduction in the nutrition of the leaves which prompts them to move on and find a better food source.
How clever is Mother Nature?
If you have noticed trees in your area why not share your photo’s or let me know if you like any of my photographs.
